Apr. 21—PIERRE — It was a near-perfect day for Mitchell High School baseball's Tyler Christensen.

In the first game of a doubleheader against Pierre, the Kernels' starting pitcher tossed a seven-inning no-hitter as Mitchell won a low-scoring 2-0 affair at Hyde Stadium. Christensen struck out five and only allowed two Pierre players to reach base while picking up his second victory of the season. With the performance, his earned-run average also dropped under one to 0.93 on the season.

Most of the first game was a pitcher's duel as Christensen went head-to-head with Pierre's Ridge Leimbach. The two tossed three scoreless innings each to begin the day, but MHS opened the scoring in the fourth inning.

Carter McCormick led off with a walk and advanced to third after a double by Gavin Jones. Jaxson Hartman brought McCormick home after a sacrifice fly to give Mitchell a 1-0 advantage.

As Christensen was in control, the offense gave him some insurance in the seventh when Parker Mandel singled home Hudson Borgan to double Mitchell's advantage. After the Governors opened the bottom half of the seventh with a walk and threatened to make a comeback, Christensen induced a double-play before forcing a ground out to finish his no-hitter.

Jones, Borgan, Mandel and Jacob Ebert all picked up a base hit, with Mandel and Hartman driving in a run each. Pierre's Leimbach took the loss after going 6 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts to one walk and two hits.

However, Mitchell dropped the second game of Monday's doubleheader 8-3, as Pierre turned the offensive switch on, scoring seven of its eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Governors opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, seeing four straight runners reach before Leimbach drove in the opening run on a single. However, the Kernels struck back with a big fourth inning.

After Canon Moller was hit by a pitch, Bailor Kristensen singled to put runners on first and second with two away. The two advanced to third and second base following a bunt from Landen Soulek before both were driven home by McCormick, who reached on an error. After taking a 2-1 advantage, MHS tacked another run after Soulek scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

But Pierre took back the lead with a four-run fifth inning. The Governors saw six of the first seven batters reach base and kept the line moving, taking a 5-3 lead. Ebert, the MHS starting pitcher, was pulled after going 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and giving up four hits as he took the loss.

Pierre added three insurance runs in the sixth. The Governors once again kept the line moving as the first four batters reached, with the first two runs coming off a Kernel error in the infield. A sac fly after the error brought home another run to give Pierre the 8-3 advantage as Mitchell was unable to make a comeback in the seventh.

MHS recorded five hits, each coming from a different batter, like in the first game. McCormick had one of those hits and recorded two RBIs in only two at-bats. After Ebert's exit, Hartman pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing two earned runs. Soulek also pitched one inning without allowing a hit.

Mitchell (7-5) is back in action on Tuesday, April 22, at Sioux Falls Lincoln with first pitch set for 6 p.m. at the Sanford Sports Complex.
