There has been a sort-of theme in stories about Duke Basketball next season that goes something like this: well, they won’t have Cooper Flagg or Cameron Boozer this time, so…

Well, maybe, maybe not.

Duke had a really solid group for next year and then managed to sign Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje.

An American citizen, Boumtje Boumtje has been playing in Spain and was off the radar for a lot of people.

Things have gone like this since he announced for the Blue Devils: well, he’s another promising big man. He’s going to come off the bench next season…if he played stateside, he might be the #1 player in this class…Actually, he is the #1 player in this class…

Now, after his highly impressive performance in the U17 World Cup, the reaction mostly has been: OMG.

He’s a really skilled player. Like Flagg and Boozer, he’s a big with guard skills. Like Boozer, his physical development is ahead of schedule. Unlike either of them, he is either 7-0 or 7-1 (both have been listed).

Sometime this week, he’ll be on campus, and we’ll find out where he stands with Duke’s other bigs. Given Cameron Williams’ agility, we could imagine Jon Scheyer occasionally putting out a frontcourt with Boumtje Boumtje, Williams, and Ngongba, if only to shut down the lane. Add Dame Sarr and Caleb Foster, and doing anything on offense would be profoundly difficult.

Anyway, for today’s Twitter Gold, we thought we’d just have some video of Boumtje Boumtje’s impressive play in Istanbul during the FIBA Tournament. He really left a big impression, and Duke fans are right to be excited.

Some of the highlights overlap, obviously, but we tried to get a good range.

Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje is not Jabari Smith.
