The Twins acquired Simeon Woods Richardson at the 2021 trade deadline as part of the return for all-star pitcher José Berríos. Woods Richardson was just 20 at the time and was among the Toronto Blue Jays’ top prospects.
Now 25, Woods Richardson is heading back to Toronto, acquired by the Blue Jays on Wednesday in a trade for cash considerations. The Twins had designated Woods Richardson for assignment on May 30 following a disastrous beginning to his season.
After spending much of the past two seasons in the Twins’ rotation, Woods Richardson began the year there, starting nine games and posting a 7.71 ERA before the Twins changed his role.
Since he was out of minor league options, they first moved him to the bullpen, where he made two scoreless appearances before being called upon to make a spot start in Chicago on May 28. It ended after 2 2/3 innings and five runs. Days later, needing a fresh arm in their bullpen, the Twins designated him for assignment.
Over the course of five seasons — he made one outing apiece in 2022 and 2023 — Woods Richardson posted a 4.76 ERA for the Twins. He established himself as a starter in the big leagues in 2024, taking over in the rotation after Louie Varland stumbled to begin the year. He now reunites with Varland, who has become one of the best relievers in the game, in Toronto.
Last season, the Twins sent Woods Richardson down to Triple-A in May and he returned later in the season and was much more effective. But after two good starts to this season, things unraveled for him, leading to the beginning of the end of his Twins’ tenure.
Now, he will try to revive his career back with the Blue Jays.
