Dec. 16---- The Willmar girls basketball team is aiming for a top seed in Section 8AAA this season and one of the reasons the Cardinals have a shot is because of Telilie Lange.
The senior guard has been a mainstay throughout her high school career and Saturday she put together one of her top performances.
Lange led Willmar to a 77-31 victory at Westonka. Along the way, she put up a triple-double, compiling 10 points, 11 assists and 14 steals. She also pulled down five rebounds as a 5-foot-8 backcourt player.
The effort helped earn her Central Lakes Conference Performer of the Week honors.
She also has helped the Cards to a 3-2 record heading into a 7:15 p.m. game Friday with the St. Cloud Crush at the Big Red Gym. The Crush, a co-operative team made up of Apollo and Tech players, is off to a 1-4 start heading into a game Tuesday at Brainerd.
Willmar is chasing Little Falls (4-0) and Fergus Falls (4-1) in the section. Willmar's losses are to Alexandria (48-41) and Brainerd (63-59). Both are Class AAAA programs.
The Cards play at Little Falls on Jan. 17 and have games with Fergus Falls in Willmar on Jan. 20 and at Fergus on Feb. 5. There's a long way to go, of course, and plenty of games in between. But with victories over Princeton (66-51), Sauk Rapids (87-27) and Westonka, Willmar's off to good start.
Montevideo's Avery Koenen, a junior forward on the North Dakota State women's basketball team, has been named the Summit League Kwik Star Peak Performer of the Week.
It's the second time this season Koenen has been honored with the award. Koenen has helped the Bison to an 8-2 record and six straight victories. She had 22 points and a career-best 16 rebounds in a victory at Eastern Illinois. It was her fourth straight double-double. She also had four steals, three assists and one block.
Koenen is averaging third nationally in NCAA Division I with a .691 field-goal percentage and 15th nationally with 7.8 defensive rebounds per game. She's sixth nationally with eight double-doubles.
Koenen, 6-foot-3, is a physical education and health major. Her parents, Kristin and Scott Koenen, both played basketball at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
Koenen was the 2023 West Central Tribune Hengstler-Ranweiler Award winner as the outstanding three-sport athlete in the area. She is averaging 18.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game for NDSU this season.
