Jun. 26—MADISON, Wis. — Sofia Lynum is one of the coaches of the Willmar Stingrays youth swimming and diving team.

She got to represent Team Minnesota last weekend through the Central Zone Multicultural Meet at the University of Wisconsin's Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.

It's a bi-annual event meant to help athletes of diverse backgrounds compete against each other. The first such meet occurred in 2015.

Fourteen states make up the Central Zone, including Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. All competed June 19-21.

Lynum was encouraged to apply for the coaching position by Stingrays head coach Heather Thompson and assistant coach Jodi Fernelius.

One Stingray who qualified for the competition was Levi Nelson. Nelson swam in the boys' 15-and-over division in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke, 50 freestyle, the 100 and 200 backstroke and the boys' 200 freestyle relay.

Nelson took second in the 100 backstroke.

Lynum credited her high school coach, Willmar's Carl Schuldes, with helping her growth as a coach.

"I think that diversity matters," Lynum said in a statement. "It makes life and the world a better place. Life would be boring if we were all the same. So, coaching my favorite sport and while celebrating our differences? It was an easy yes that I wanted to apply to coach."

The Willmar Velocity age 10-and-under fastpitch softball team took home the Gold Bracket championship of the T-Town Showdown on Sunday, June 21 in Andover.

The team played five games, winning four.

In pool play, the Velocity beat St. Michael-Albertville Black 13-4 and Anoka-Ramsey Silver 12-5. Willmar lost to Andover Erickson 14-1.

In bracket play, the Velocity beat Champlin Park 5-2 in the semifinals and then defeated Forest Lake 5-1 for the championship.

Team members are: Marleigh Elmhorst, Lilly Kampsen, Leah Kafati Torres, Ariya Laughlin, Paisley Nath, Olivia Pattison, Scarlett Scomicka, Brinley Wentzel, Gracyn Wolf and Avery Yungerberg.

The head coach is Lexi Kopacek. Assistant coaches are Sissi Torres and Brandi Kampsen.

Lilly Kampsen had two inside-the-park home runs and recorded 17 strikeouts. Kafati Torres had 16 strikes.

The tournament victory gives the Velocity a berth to the NAFA Northern Nationals in Cottage Grove in mid-July.
