Mar. 2—MITCHELL — Dakota Riptide standout Kip Wede led his team with four event victories in his home pool at the South Dakota 13-and-over State A swimming championships held Feb. 26 to March 1 at the Mitchell Recreation Center.
Wede, in the boys age 13-14 division, won the 50 breaststroke (27.32 seconds), 100 breaststroke (59.63), 200 breaststroke (2 minutes, 14.48 seconds) and 100 individual medley (55.52). He added second-place finishes in the 50 backstroke (27.26) and 50 freestyle (23.17).
The Riptide had numerous other top-eight individual finishers. In the boys age 17-19 age group, Carver Denning took third place in the 400 individual medley (4:50.75) and 1000 IM (11:28.69), plus third in the 500 freestyle (5:24.68) and 1650 freestyle (19:52.56), while finishing fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:18.28). Jordan Herrlein took fourth place in the 50 breaststroke (33.34) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.07), fifth in the 50 backstroke (30.70) and 100 backstroke (1:07.07). He added a pair of eighth-place marks in the 50 freestyle (25.98) and 100 freestyle (58.59). Colin Wilson was seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:19.13) and eighth in the 50 backstroke (32.34).
For the girls age 17-19, Cora Hofer had four top-eight finishes, including fifth place in the 50 freestyle (25.36), 50 breaststroke (33.48) and 100 backstroke (1:06.19), plus a sixth-place time in the 100 freestyle (57.91). James Schelske had a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:22.17), a fifth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (57.70) and eighth-place marks in the 200 freestyle (2:05.81) and 40 backstroke (32.40). Rorey Koch took sixth place in the 100 back (1:08.66) and 200 back (2:30.12), plus seventh place in the 50 back (32.21) and 500 freestyle (6:21.71).
Ben Anderson posted a third-place finish in the boys age 15-16 50 backstroke (26.85). He tacked on seventh place in the 50 freestyle (23.62) and 100 backstroke (56.73) and eighth place in the 100 freestyle (53.48). Also in the division, Peyton Miller was sixth in the 50 backstroke (28.05) and seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:08.39), while Jack Lentz was sixth in the 200 IM (2:17.86) and eighth in the 100 IM (1:01.86).
Bella Russell claimed second place in the girls age 15-16 division 100 backstroke (2:21.50). She was also fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:41.28), fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:07.95), sixth in the 100 IM (1:07.25) and eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:14.64). Alexandra Stange picked up fourth-place finishes in the 1,650 freestyle (19:35.67) and 400 IM (5:08.75), along with fifth in the 1,000 freestyle (11:46.72), seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:29.56) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:40.70). Mataya Mutziger was sixth in the 50 backstroke (31.99).
Alongside Wede in the boys age 13-14 ranks, Haistyn Huss clocked a second-place finish in the 50 breaststroke (30.91) and was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.28). He also managed fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.52) and 200 IM (2:36.52), fifth in the 100 freestyle (57.20) and 1,650 freestyle (21:41.12) and sixth in the 400 IM (5:32.06).
Quinnley Miner took second in the girls age 13-14 division 50 butterfly (28.92), along with fifth in the 50 freestyle (26.68) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (59.28).
In terms of team points, Sioux Falls Swim Team won the boys team points with 2,041 points, followed by Watertown with 1,447 points, Rushmore in third with 1,222 points, Dakota Riptide in fourth (698) and Aberdeen in fifth (643). The girls team points were led by Sioux Falls (2,749), followed by Watertown (1,640), Aberdeen (604), Rushmore (537) and Dakota Riptide (461).
Mitchell resident Colin Pickett was the boys high point scorer for the meet, winning 11 total gold medals in the age 15-16 group and scoring 894.8 points for the Sioux Falls Swim Team. Owen Raml had a state title in the age 17-19 100 IM finals (54.71) and had five top-three finishes for Sioux Falls. For the girls, Mitchell's Sophia Huber was a top-three finisher in 11 events.
