Trey Murphy III trade update from NBA insider doesn't bode well for Warriors, Celtics, and Pistons originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Trey Murphy III has been the subject of trade rumors for nearly the entire offseason, as the New Orleans Pelicans need to make significant roster changes after a 26-win season, and Murphy is one of the team's most valuable trade assets.
The 26-year-old averaged 21 points per game for the second straight year in 2025 and continued to display his high-level 3-and-D skill set.
Murphy is a high-volume, efficient three-point shooter, nailing nearly 38% of his threes on over 8 attempts per game last season. The 6-foot-8 forward also showcased his defensive versatility and ability to guard multiple positions on the court.
Though New Orleans could get a solid return for Murphy on the trade market, it sounds like the team wants to keep the former first-round pick around, at least heading into the 2026 campaign.

During a livestream with Bleacher Report earlier this week, The Stein Line's Jake Fischer stated that the Pelicans want to retain Murphy, as there isn't a market for the sharpshooter that meets New Orleans' asking price.
Stein added that the Pelicans have dropped their asking price for Murphy from four to three first-round picks.
"At this point in time, I am working with the belief that the Pelicans want to keep Trey Murphy," Fischer said. “This whole offseason chatter around him kind of got blown out of proportion by them letting other teams around the draft believe he was available, but there just isn’t really a market for him at that price point that the Pelicans are asking for."
Murphy is a valuable player who could elevate a contending team in the title picture. However, it makes sense that nobody wants to trade three future first-round picks for someone who has never been an All-Star.
Nevertheless, with the Pelicans now likely shutting down trade talks for Murphy, the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, and Detroit Pistons will have to pivot to other trade targets.
Golden State is in pursuit of LeBron James, but it's looking unlikely that the team lands the future Hall of Famer. Murphy would've been a solid backup plan for the Warriors to serve as a high-level wing starter next to Steph Curry, but they'll have to look elsewhere now.
Boston just traded away Jaylen Brown, and Murphy would make sense as a replacement. However, with Murphy now likely to stay put and President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens unwilling to meet the Pelicans' asking price, the Celtics will need to look elsewhere.
Murphy would be a perfect fit with Detroit and bolster the team's lackluster three-point shooting, but it feels like the Pistons need to figure out Jalen Duren's future before making another substantial move.
Overall, Murphy is still an ascending talent who should help New Orleans win games in 2026. However, his services would definitely be used better on a contender, so it's disappointing for teams like the Warriors, Celtics, and Pistons that the Virginia product is off the market.
