The Boston Red Sox have been without Trevor Story since he went on the injured list with a sports hernia.
Story has been on the injured list since May 16 and underwent surgery to address his injury. He is working his way back, and Chad Tracy revealed on June 18 that he was progressing nicely.
"He's actually progressing pretty nicely. He's kind of like... running," Tracy told reporters on June 18. "It's not like full-blown sprinting, but he's jogging at a pretty good pace. He's actually swung a bat off a tee a little bit. He's got a ways to go, but he's in a better spot than I figured I'd see him in at this point."
On Thursday, Story told Rob Bradford that he could be back around the eight-week mark from his injury rather than the 12-week mark. This could be a huge boost for the Red Sox as they try to make a miraculous push for the postseason in the second half.
"Trevor Story said he is currently feeling like his return will be closer to the eight weeks than the 12 weeks," Bradford wrote on X. "Has been hitting."
Story had a resurgent year last season, playing in 157 games. It was the first time since 2021 that he played in more than 100 games. He slashed .263/.308/.433 and hit 25 home runs. He was a key part of their offense, and perhaps his return will spark a run. The Red Sox are not out of the race, but their chances are fading.
Story is not the only Red Sox player out with an injury. Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony are also trying to make returns and help the team go on an unexpected run.
