SAN FRANCISCO -- There was a moment at the end of the first half in Tuesday's win over the Golden State Warriors when Tyrese Maxey and Trendon Watford had a serious conversation on their way to the locker room. The Philadelphia 76ers were rolling, but Maxey wanted Watford to shoot the ball on the last possession of the half and he let his thoughts be heard.
After the win, the conversation turned lighthearted in the locker room as the two close friends addressed the convo as Watford looks to find his rhythm with the Sixers. The 5-year forward out of LSU had 16 points and eight rebounds in the win over the Warriors as he continues to find a rhythm and fill in for the suspended Paul George on the floor.
"Just starting to get some more minutes and get out there with them," Watford said. "Unfortunately, P went out. P is out for a while, but next man up, and I think it's gonna be a good opportunity for me."
Maxey, who's locker is almost always next to Watford's on the road, was messing with Watford during his media session and Watford pointed it out.
"I almost had to choke this due at halftime," Watford joked. "This dude next to me, but yeah that's it."
Maxey then yelled, "You ever met somebody made that you want them to shoot!?" Watford shot back a look before the two shared a laugh.
That's just the relationship Watford and Maxey have. The two have been close for almost forever and the two have been able to lean on that relationship in tough times, As Watford navigates injury and adjusting to his first season in Philadelphia, the one constant he can lean on is Maxey.
"Yeah, it's been big," Watford said. "It's been bi. Just going through the ups and downs of the season, going through the emotions of the season together. It's been good just to be here with him and just day in, day out. Just seeing him day in, day out and play together day in, day out so it's good. 50 games, we have a long way to go. Not too long, but hopefully we have a long way to go, so just keep building and keep going from here."
Watford has been dealing with a number of injuries in his first season in Philadelphia. He has dealt with hamstring issues as well as an adductor injury that held him out for quite some time. He has had to persevere through all of that to get to where he is right now with the Sixers.
"It's been tough," Watford admitted. "It's just a part of basketball though. Injuries are unfortunate, but like I said, when I was hurt, it always could be worse, you know what I mean? I could be out right now and not be playing for the rest of the season. So, I'm just glad to be back, you know what I mean? I'm glad to be back and figure it out from here."
