The Philadelphia 76ers have hired their new leader of the basketball department with Mike Gansey taking over as the team's President of Basketball Operations. Gansey will take over for Daryl Morey who held the position for six seasons in Philadelphia.
Gansey will have some decisions to make in the coming offseason with the draft approaching on June 23 and then free agency starting just a week after. The Sixers will have until June 29 to make decisions on players with team options. It's time to look at the players with team options and predict what the Sixers will do with those players.
Up first in this series is Trendon Watford who signed a 2-year deal in the 2025 offseason. He has a $2.8 million team option for the 2026-27 season and the Sixers didn't get the best season from him, but there were factors for the down season for him.
Watford was limited to only 53 games due to a variety of injuries that held him back a bit. He averaged 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 51.5% from the floor, but only 20% from deep. All of those numbers were a big drop off from his final season with the Brooklyn Nets in 2024-25 when he averaged 10.2 points.
One might believe the Sixers should decline his option and let him walk, but Watford is certainly worth another look in the coming season. Per Cleaning the Glass, he had an assist percentage of 21.8% which is in the 98th percentile. That shows Watford's versatility and his ability to create offense with the ball in his hands. The Sixers didn't get to tap too much into that part of his game due to the injuries and one has to believe they would like to see what he can do with a healthy season.
Watford, obviously, isn't much of a shooter as he is only a career 32.5% 3-point shooter, but due to the law of averages, he will likely find a way to get back up to that level in the 2026-27 season. He is, obviously, better than 20% shooting based on his overall 5-year career.
Today's NBA is based on versatility and Watford brings that. He offers size, skill, ball-handling, and playmaking from the big man spot to give Philadelphia another option next to close friend Tyrese Maxey and the Sixers should bring him back. He is on a cheap deal and can be a key contributor with a clean bill of health, which is something he didn't have in the 2025-26 season.
