All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson is furious with the Cincinnati Bengals.
And fans of the Washington Commanders can only beam at the potential trade that may finally come about.
Hendrickson has recorded over 17 sacks in each of the last two seasons. He has been Cincinnati's best defensive player and a key cog in the locker room over the years including their run to Super Bowl LVI.
Despite his success, Cincinnati has been silent in negotiating a potential long-term deal with the star. And after many public comments surrounding his displeasure, Hendrickson is continuing to push for support.
“If I sat here with four sacks, they’d want a pay cut and some money back. ... I’m not going to apologize for the rates being paid to defensive ends in the National Football League," Hendrickson said.
Hendrickson is, of course, correct. In the short shelf-life that is the NFL, players lose money all the time due to injuries. Whenever there is a chance to collect a massive contract, players need to do whatever they can to get it.
That is what the edge rusher is doing.
And the longer the Bengals hold out themselves, it appears that Hendrickson is ready to either be moved to a new team, or get a new deal. If Cincinnati chooses to trade Hendrickson, the Commanders would be a perfect fit.
We hear he's seeking $30 million per year, hardly outrageous even though he's now 30 years old. And he says he simply won't play for Cincy under the terms of his current deal.
Is that a threat? A promise? A trade demand?
Washington is in need of a pass rusher of Hendrickson's skill set. He could be the finishing piece on a Super Bowl roster.
The ball, though, is firmly in Cincinnati's court. And it doesn't appear they want to do anything with his money at this point. ... meaning they might have to do something else.
