Should they stay or should they go for it? That's what Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington has to decide ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Entering play Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates (37-37) are in fourth place in the National League Central, nine games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. But they're only two games back in the NL Wild Card standings and have a 38.2% chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.
If Cherington goes all-in, there are three potential lineup additions he could explore, according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan, who are out with their list of the top 100 trade candidates.
No. 13 on the list is San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez. McDaniel and Passan put the likelihood of a trade at 90% and list the Pirates, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Guardians as best fits.
The 29-year-old Arraez, a three-time All-Star, has won three batting titles and two Silver Slugger Awards during his eight-year career. He's currently hitting .319, which is fifth-best in MLB.
No. 17 on the list is Houston Astros first baseman Christian Walker. ESPN's duo puts the likelihood of a trade at 45% and list the Pirates, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays, Guardians, Miami Marlins, Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres as best fits.
The 35-year-old Walker, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner, is hitting .245 this year and his 18 home runs are tied for ninth-best in the big leagues.
No. 21 on the list is Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers. McDaniel and Passan put the likelihood of a trade at 85% and list the Pirates, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Padres and Tampa Bay Rays as best fits.
The 29-year-old Jeffers is currently on the injured list with a broken left hand and is expected back in the lineup next month. He's hitting .295 this season with seven home runs and a .949 OPS in 37 games.
