Update, 2:12 p.m. ET: As this story was in production, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was also removed after being hit by a pitch. We will have updates on both players when they become available.

2:08 p.m. ET: On the same day that we heard that rival executives expect the Toronto Blue Jays to be in the mix for ace pitcher Tarik Skubal on the trade market, the team is now awaiting an injury update on ace Dylan Cease.

Cease, signed to a seven-year deal worth $210 million, left Sunday's start against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the top of the fifth inning with two outs. There was no immediate word as to what was bothering the right-hander, who had allowed two earned runs on four hits through 4.2 innings. He walked one and struck out eight, giving him 92 strikeouts on the young campaign.

An injury is the last thing that the Blue Jays need, as their entire season has been defined by them.

Already, Toronto has lost Cody Ponce, Bowden Francis and Jose Berrios for the season. Furthermore, Anthony Santander might miss the entire season. Alejandro Kirk, Addison Barger, Nathan Lukes, Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber are all on the injured list right now. Trey Yesavage and George Springer have already been on the injured list, but have returned.

Cease has been one of the rocks of the rotation, and there are no real answers if he's forced to miss any time. Toronto has been utilizing an opener and Spencer Miles in the No. 5 spot in the rotation already, and the top prospect answers aren't great because of their own injury issues. For instance, Jake Bloss is still recovering from his own Tommy John surgery and won't be an option until later in the year.

While he's also pitched very well this season, Cease has been one of the most durable pitchers in baseball, which is something the Jays have been counting on.

Cease has made 32 starts or more in each of the last five years and also made a full 12-start workload in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season (60 games).

Up next

First and foremost, we'll wait for an update on Cease. Then, the Jays will get ready for a new series that begins on Monday night against the Miami Marlins.

First pitch from Rogers Centre is set for 7:07 p.m. ET as Yesavage pitches against Janson Junk. Yesavage is 2-1 with a 1.07 ERA and is coming off a sparkling outing at Yankee Stadium.

Junk is just 2-5 with a 5.07 ERA. The Marlins are 24-29 entering play on Sunday.
