EAST LANSING — The final outcome was all but certain with the East Lansing boys basketball team owning a 20-point advantage in the late stages of the fourth quarter.
But that didn't matter for K.J. Torbert, who was diving on the ball battling for a loose ball after assisting on a made basket by the Trojans.
Torbert eventually gained control of the ball and called timeout to give East Lansing an extra possession.
Ant that moment was part another strong performance for Torbert as he helped the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Division 1 top-ranked Trojans roll to a 78-50 victory over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
"He's a baller, he's a hooper, he loves the game of basketball and he doesn't cheat any steps," East Lansing coach Ray Mitchell said of Torbert, "He's always going to work hard, he's always going to do things to win and that just shows how competitive he is. He's going to do all the little things that we talk about. It's funny because that's what he does every single time he comes out."
Torbert finished with a game-high 35 points and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Trojans as they improved to 20-1 ahead of their regular-season finale Friday, Feb. 20 against Okemos. That included a big opening quarter where he scored 17 points to help East Lansing take control early and own a 23-8 advantage after the first quarter.
"We just had to come out with energy half," Torbert said. "That's what we did. That's why we had that big lead. We kind of slacked off in the third quarter but we picked it up in the fourth."
As the Trojans look to repeat as Division 1 state champions when the postseason begins next week, Mitchell wants to see his team master all the details.
"I told the guys we're not playing against the scoreboard, we're kind of playing against ourselves," Mitchell said. "We've just got to get better at little details. I thought the third quarter we didn't come out focused and we've got to make sure we're focused every single quarter."
Kingston Thomas added 15 points and Dillon Stewart finished with 10 points for East Lansing.
