Even though the Kentucky boys high school volleyball tournament is already in the books, state championship season in the Bluegrass state really gets going this weekend.
From May 21-23, the track and field state championships will be held at the University of Kentucky. There is plenty of talent from Northern Kentucky who will bring home a load of medals.
To preview the meet, let's take a look at the top contenders. All athletes and relay teams included have a top-five time, distance or height in their class in the state, according to MileSplit, regardless of their championship seed, which is based on regional results.
The senior owns the third-best 110-meter hurdles time in Class 1A this season, crossing the line in 15.51 seconds at the Diocese of Covington Invitational. He has won six of his nine competitions in that event this season, going under 16 seconds five times.
Dayton football star Malachi Kennedy has the fifth-best mark in the state at 15.89 seconds.
The senior's 400-meter dash time of 49.78 seconds, run at the Rod Russell Invitational on May 8, leads Class 2A. Blettner has run four 400-meter races this season, with three times under 51 seconds.
He is also a part of two of the best relay teams in the state. He ran with Charlie Ink, Jack Fender and Garrett Gallagher to post a 4x200 meter time of 1:30.11 at the Class 2A, Region 4 championships, which is third in the state.
He won the 4x400 meter regional title with Joe Mayer, Sam Stout and Dominic Terzo in 3:31.0, which ranks fourth in the state.
Brockman recently earned a personal best of 11 feet, 6 inches to win the Class 1A, Region 4 pole vault title. That mark is tied with Brossart's Justin Bezold for fifth in Class 1A. Bezold tied his personal best at the regional meet but came in second based on count backs.
She won the Class 3A discus title as a freshman and finished second last year. Her mark of 132-3 is second only to Lafayette's Aleigha Sullivan, who is the defending state champion.
One area where the Lady 'Stangs can separate from the rest of the Northern Kentucky teams in Class 1A is the pole vault. Curtsinger is tied for the state lead at 10-0. Her teammates, Paislee Litmer and Maria Everett, have personal bests of 8-6 and can earn points by finishing in the top eight. St. Henry's Alyson Yuksewich also has a season's best mark of 8-6.
The junior opened the season with a high jump personal best of 6-2, which is tied for fourth in the state. He has only cleared 6 feet twice and took third at the Class 2A, Region 4 meet with a mark of 5-8.
He also ran on the 4x100 meter relay team with Jack Fender, Garrett Gallagher and Ryan Tenhundfeld that is fourth in the state with a time of 43.65 seconds.
The junior set a goal to throw the shot 41 feet at the Class 3A, Region 5 meet and hit it spot on. It's the top mark in the state heading into the final weekend. She took fourth place last year and won the 2026 indoor state title.
A new pole vault personal best of 14-8 gives the junior the second-best mark in Class 3A this year. He has won all but one competition this year and has cleared 14 feet at his last four meets.
Harlan has taken second place at the Class 1A state meet each of the first two years of her career. She is tied for the second-best mark in the state at 5-4, but if she can match her personal best of 5-6 from 2025, she'll contend for the top of the podium.
Her teammate Stella Flick and Brossart's Jadelyn Scharold are close behind at 5-2, which is tied for fourth in the state.
A second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run in 4:12.51 at the Class 3A, Region 5 meet gave the junior the third-best time in Class 3A this year.
It's been two years since Howard won an outdoor state championship, but she has the inside track in two events. She ranks first in Class 3A in both the long jump (19-1.25) and the triple jump (40-5). George Rogers Clark's Teigh Yeast will be her main competitor in both events.
She is also tied for fifth in the 100-meter dash after winning the Class 3A, Region 5 title in 12.18 seconds.
Jones has had a strong year in the throws circles. He enters the state meet as the seventh seed in the discus but owns the fifth-best mark in the state from when he threw 150-9 at Mason. It was one of two marks this season over 140 feet.
It's been a breakout season for the senior hurdler. His 110-meter time of 14.98 seconds is second in Class 2A, less than one-tenth of a second behind Hopkinsville's Keyshun Teal. He also owns the fourth-best time in the 300-meter hurdles at 41.7 seconds.
The defending Class 2A state champion has company this year. He tied his personal best of 14-6 at Frederick Douglass, but is second in the state to Shelby County's Wesley Hurt, who recently jumped 14-7 at the Class 2A, Region 3 championships.
He won the Class 3A, Region 5 high jump with a personal best of 6-4, tied for fifth in 3A along with Scott's Jack Fraser and Boone County's Joel Mazala.
On April 25, Lane broke the school's 56-year-old 100-meter dash school record with a time of 10.82 seconds. He has since lowered his record to 10.73 seconds, which is fourth in Class 3A and a quarter second behind Frederick Douglass's Kaden John.
Arguably the top underclassman distance runner in Northern Kentucky, Mann sports a 3,200-meter personal best of 9:16.43, good for fourth in Class 3A.
Mayer will finish his career as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in school history. Entering the state meet, he has the top 3,200-meter time of 9:20.47. His teammate Braden Franxman has fourth-best time in the two-mile run, clocking a 9:28.98.
He has run 4:22.02 in the 1,600-meter run, which is the third-best time in Class 2A this year, and leads the state in the 4x800 meter relay along with Franxman, Jackson Germann and Luke O'Hara with a time of 7:59.51.
He has run the 110-meter hurdles in under 15 seconds four times this season, with a season's best of 14.74 seconds that ranks fifth in Class 3A. If he can approach or surpass his personal best of 14.57, he could move a few spots up the podium.
The junior has been a sprint star all season, but his best event is the 300-meter hurdles, where his time of 40.57 seconds to win the Class 1A, Region 4 title ranks third in the state.
She tied her pole vault personal best of 10-6 to win the Class 3A, Region 5 title. It is also tied for the second-best mark in the state.
Ryle's Emily Smith, who took third place at the regional meet, is tied for fourth in the state with a mark of 10-1.
Nordman is the defending Class 1A 400-meter state champion but will be favored in two events this weekend. Her times of 25.64 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 56.34 seconds in the 400-meter dash are both tops in the state. She has a 100-meter personal best of 12.57 seconds, which is fourth in 1A.
Walton-Verona's Maggie Meyer is ranked third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.94 seconds.
Can Parke complete the triple-double at her future home, the University of Kentucky? The two-time defending Class 1A champion in the 800- and 1,600-meter run currently leads the state in both events with times of 2:15.92 and 4:59.6. Her main competitor in both events will be Lexington Christian's Kennedy Moughamian.
Brossart's Larah Callahan currently ranks fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:19.59.
The senior has hung around in the top five of the Class 2A long jump all year, but jumped a 3-foot personal best of 25-8.5 to win the Class 2A, Region 4 title and vault into the top mark in the state by almost 2 feet.
The senior rounds out the Colonels' distance squad with the fifth-best 800-meter time in Class 2A at 1:59.87. He has run under two minutes twice, and under 2:03 a total of four times.
The senior has had a dominant year in the 400-meter dash, winning all but one of his races. His time of 49.11 seconds at the Eastern Relays is the fifth-best in the state. His personal best of 48.94 seconds could earn him a top-three finish at state.
He is also a part of the top 4x400 meter relay time in the state with Drew Carskadon, Thompson Hall and Nicholas Kopp. They ran 3:22.38 at the Class 3A, Region 5 meet to break their own school record for the second time this year. That time is one second faster than Oldham County.
For the majority of the season, Topmiller has the top high jump mark in Class 1A at 6-4. His school record is tied for second in the state after Oneida Baptist's Tommy Branstutter jumped 6-5 at the Class 1A, Region 6 meet. Topmiller recently won the Region 4 meet with a clearance of 6-2.
Ludlow's Andre Englemon is also at 6-4, achieving it at Campbell County on April 25.
The Wisconsin commit won four events at the Class 3A, Region 5 meet, but it's to be determined how many events he'll run in his final state meet.
He owns the top time in Class 3A in the 1,600-meter run (4:05.9) and the second-best 3,200-meter time (9:12.55). In a state with ridiculously fast 800-meter runners, his personal best of 1:53.67 is sixth overall.
Cooper's 4x800 meter relay team of Van Laningham, Aaron Foote, Grayson Parker and Ryan Richards has the fourth-best in the state at 8:06.25.
The senior is turning in her best performances at the end of the season. Three weeks after running an 800-meter personal best of fifth 2:17.07 at Anderson, she won the Class 3A, Region 5 title in 2:17.89. The former time is currently fifth in Class 3A. She took fifth place at the 2025 state meet.
The returning Class 1A champion in the discus and shot put has her work cut out for her. She ranks second in the state with a mark of 40-1.5 in the shot put behind Highlands' Latin's Logan Boyd. Her discus mark of 130-4 is currently second to Russellville's DeMyiah Allen.
Bellevue's Chloe Meyers ranks fourth in the discus with a throw of 120-9.
Wyant has honed her jumping skills by also competing in the hurdles this season, and it's paid off. Her triple jump personal best of 35-1 ranks third in Class 1A. It is her only mark this season above 34 feet; her second-best jump this season is 33-6.
The first day of the 2026 state meet should bring multiple relay titles back to Northern Kentucky.
The Walton-Verona 4x100 meter relay of Abrielle Hooten, Maci Pettit, Josie Holtzapple and Maggie Meyer won the Class 1A, Region 4 title in a new school and track record of 50.76 seconds. That ranks second in the state, about one second behind Lexington Christian.
The same quartet has run the best time in the state in the 4x200 meter relay, winning the regional meet in 1:47.67.
Beechwood's Avery Woolridge, Sarah Gigliotti, Emma Smith and Olivia Schneider own the fifth-best 4x100 meter relay time in the state at 51.7 seconds. Brossart enters the state meet as the sixth seed based on regional times.
Woolridge, Gigliotti, Olivia Schneider and Ella Schneider also have the third-best 4x200 meter relay time at 1:48.62.
Northern Kentucky is almost assured the girls 4x400 meter relay title. Brossart's group of Callahan, Aubrey Bevan, Tessa Hafer and Mackinley Scott leads the state with a time of 4:11.33. For Beechwood, Nordman, Ruby Fries, Sammy Grubish and Ella Schneider are second in the rankings at 4:16.44. Holtzapple, Hooten, Pettit and Ava Hargett have Walton-Verona ranked third at 4:17.84. Newport Central Catholic, the defending state champion, owns the fifth-best time at 4:19.64 thanks to Grace Mumper, Lucy Kennedy, Maggie West and Caroline Rust.
Hafer, Callahan, Addison Geiman and Callie Ochsner own the second-best 4x800 meter time in the state at 9:53.7, only behind Lexington Christian. Rust, Mumper, West and Ava Willen have the fourth-best time in the state at 10:23.9
Beechwood's Nathan Pabst, Cole Hoskins, Chase McDaniel and Brody Aylor ran 43.58 seconds in the 4x100 meter relay at the Class 1A, Region 4 championships, good for the second-best time in the state. Pabst, McDaniel, Aylor and Westin Wyant own the third-best 4x200 meter relay time in the state at 1:31.0.
Wyant, Elijah Hornsby, Charlie Skeen and Anderson Durrett will be the 4x400 meter relay favorites, entering the state meet with a seed time of 3:29.99.
Rounding out Beechwood's relay entries are Skeen, Sloan Pangallo, Ethan Muck and Braxton Lindloff with a time of 8:38.44 in the 4x800 meter relay, good for fifth in the state.
Brossart's Kyle Piscitello, Reid Thompson, Owen Doyle and Max Leuderalbert ran 3:33.27 in the 4x400 meter relay to take second place at the regional meet. It is the fourth-best time in the state.
Doyle, Evan LaBeau, Parker Litmer and Adam Tarvin currently rank second in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:29.69.
St. Henry's Bryson Colyer, Mason Dunwoody, Logan Vaniglia and Evan Parhad aren't far behind with a 4x800 time of 8:30.5, ranking third in the state.
Bredyn Elder, Nathan Verax, Cruze Sauley and Landon Berry ran 1:28.1 to win the Class 3A, Region 5 title. It is currently the No. 2 time in the state, just a half-second slower than Frederick Douglass.
Sydney Houlihan, Isla Meyn, Ella Taylor and Eva Lang stormed to the Class 3A, Region 5 title in 9:43.89, which is fourth in the state.
The Campbell County quartet of Katherine McKee, Allison McKee, Lila Dunlevy and Brooklynn Phelps is sixth in the state after running 9:53.91 at the regional meet.

Class 1A boys relays

Pabst, McDaniel, Aylor and Westin Wyant own the third-best 4x200 meter relay time in the state at 1:31.0.

Wyant, Elijah Hornsby, Charlie Skeen and Anderson Durrett will be the 4x400 meter relay favorites, entering the state meet with a seed time of 3:29.99.
Rounding out Beechwood's relay entries are Skeen, Sloan Pangallo, Ethan Muck and Braxton Lindloff with a time of 8:38.44 in the 4x800 meter relay, good for fifth in the state.
Brossart's Kyle Piscitello, Reid Thompson, Owen Doyle and Max Leuderalbert ran 3:33.27 in the 4x400 meter relay to take second place at the regional meet. It is the fourth-best time in the state.
Doyle, Evan LaBeau, Parker Litmer and Adam Tarvin currently rank second in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:29.69.
St. Henry's Bryson Colyer, Mason Dunwoody, Logan Vaniglia and Evan Parhad aren't far behind with a 4x800 time of 8:30.5, ranking third in the state.
Ryle boys 4x200 meter relay
Bredyn Elder, Nathan Verax, Cruze Sauley and Landon Berry ran 1:28.1 to win the Class 3A, Region 5 title. It is currently the No. 2 time in the state, just a half-second slower than Frederick Douglass.
Highlands girls 4x800 meter relay
Sydney Houlihan, Isla Meyn, Ella Taylor and Eva Lang stormed to the Class 3A, Region 5 title in 9:43.89, which is fourth in the state.
The Campbell County quartet of Katherine McKee, Allison McKee, Lila Dunlevy and Brooklynn Phelps is sixth in the state after running 9:53.91 at the regional meet.
