Jun. 4—MITCHELL — As the spring sports season comes to a close, the South Dakota high school trap shooting state tournament is on the docket for June 7-8 in Aberdeen. Class 1A is set to compete on Saturday, with Class 2A on Sunday.
According to the South Dakota High School Clay Target League, more than 850 competitors representing more than 50 high schools are expected to attend this year.
Mitchell's Mallory Fortin ranked as the top female in Class 2A Conference 1 and No. 6 overall in the state with a season average of 22.6 targets out of 25, with teammate Brooke Ver Hey (21.9) in third in the conference and tied for No. 8 overall statewide. Between the MHS pair in second was Platte-Geddes' Kalli Summerville (22.0), ranked seventh in the state.
Also for Platte-Geddes, Owen Feiok posted a season average of 24.7 as the top male in the conference and is ranked No. 3 overall in the state. Three times this season, Feiok had a 50-straight streak, with 25-straight on two more occasions.
Platte-Geddes also boasts the ninth-ranked male statewide in Remington Meyerink (23.9), with Holdyn Gallagher (23.8) tied for 10th. Mitchell's top shooter in the overall male standings is Chance Henkel (23.3), who is tied for 18th overall and is one of four area marksmen to join the 50-straight club this season. Platte-Geddes topped the conference's team standings, with Mitchell in second place.
In Class 1A, Bon Homme's Colby Soukup had the top male shooter in Conference 1 based on season average at 21.8. Teammates Addison Hovorka (20.6) and Sidney Pavel (15.9) ranked first and second in the female standings. Their efforts helped Bom Homme to the No. 1 team ranking in the conference.
Chamberlain's Chase Hansen was the top male shooter in Conference 4 on season average at 23.6, while Winner/Colome's Oren Sargent (22.8) was third. Chamberlain's Kali Randall (22.7) topped the female leaderboard and ranks fifth statewide, with teammate Amelia Schroeder (20.8) in third in the conference. Winner/Colome finished as the top-ranked team in the conference.
Kimball's Chevy Fees, who is tied for 10th statewide, earned the top spot on the male charts in Conference 6 with a season average of 23.8, and McCook Central's Hunter Sieverding (23.7) was close behind in third. Also representing McCook Central, Evangeline Gerlach (20.7) was third in the female rankings. McCook Central slotted in as the No. 2 team in the conference.
In the skeet shooting discipline, Mitchell's Trinity Wilson (16.7) owns the No. 3 spot in the overall female rankings based on season average, with teammate Hadleigh Wilson (13.8) in seventh. In the statewide male standings, Chamberlain's Chase Hansen (23.8) and Chase McQuirk (23.4) are ranked third and fourth, respectively. Kimball's Chevy Fees (22.8) is tied for sixth, and Lyman's Conor Samco (22.7) is tied for ninth.
In the 5-stand shooting discipline, Tripp-Delmont/Armour's Alexis Hoffman (10.9) was second on the female leaderboard.
