Myah Epps, a top high school basketball player and Louisville signee, is on a "long journey to recovery" after a car crash left her with severe injuries.
Epps, an 18-year-old senior at Homestead High School in Indiana, "was in a horrible car accident on her way to school" on Friday, March 13, according to a GoFundMe set up to support the medical expenses for her family.
She was taken to a local hospital in Ft. Wayne before being airlifted to Indianapolis, according to the fundraiser. "By the Grace of God she is still with us," the page added.
Epps, who signed with Louisville in November, sustained "critical injuries" in the crash, "and has a long recovery ahead of her," per the GoFundMe.
"Many people have asked how they can help. This GoFundMe has been created to help the family with the extensive healthcare expenses, hotel stays, food, and necessities."
The GoFundMe said the Epps family "is so thankful for the outpouring of love they have received through messages, calls, and prayers that have been sent to them."
The Homestead High School Basketball social media accounts have been sharing updates on Epps since the accident, and on Saturday, March 14, the school issued a statement from the team's head coach, Rod Parker, with permission on behalf of her family, to "address inaccurate rumors currently circulating online" regarding Epps' condition.
"Myah, an HHS athlete, was involved in a car accident and is currently in stable condition. Other information being shared is inaccurate," the post on X said.
On Sunday, March 15, the school said, "According to family, Dr.’s reported that her back surgery went well. Continued prayers for Myah as she begins her recovery."
During an interview in November, Epps spoke highly of Louisville' recruiters and the school's culture, emphasizing that the Cardinals share the "same values" as her and her family. "It felt like the right thing to do," Epps said of her commitment to Louisville. "I just felt it in my entire soul, it was just the right thing to do."
