The Los Angeles Dodgers expect second baseman Tommy Edman to begin his rehab assignment next week, per Katie Woo of The Athletic.

Edman has spent all of 2026 on the injured list as he recovers from offseason surgery on his right ankle. Edman landed on the injured list twice in 2025 due to his ankle, and played exclusively second base during the back end of the season while he nursed a minor injury.

“Tommy Edman (ankle surgery) was scheduled to face live pitching in Arizona over the weekend and is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week,” Woo wrote. It will likely be a lengthy stint for Edman, who has progressed slowly through baseball activities.”

Woo also elaborated on the role Edman will take on when he inevitably returns, saying he would take the lion’s share of reps at second base while filling in for Andy Pages in center field on occasion.

Edman played 97 games for the Dodgers last season, posting a .656 OPS with 13 homers and 49 RBIs. The Dodgers are severely lacking in offensive production from second base, posting just an 81 wRC+ from the position this year, so they’ll hope a rejuvenated Edman can improve their offense.

Who has Filled in for Tommy Edman This Season?

The Dodgers have had several players fill in at second base this season, with Alex Freeland making the most appearances there. Freeland, now in Triple-A following Mookie Betts’ return, hit two homers and had a .659 OPS in 31 games at second. He is the only Dodger to hit a homer while playing second base this season.

Miguel Rojas, Hyeseong Kim and Santiago Espinal have all played second at some point this season, and Rojas has performed the best among them—at least with the bat. As a second baseman this season, Rojas has a .746 OPS and a .320 batting average.

Rojas and Kim currently split duties at second base, with Kim starting against right-handers and Rojas starting against southpaws.

The Dodgers will hope the trio of Rojas, Espinal and Kim can continue to pull their weight until Edman comes back, and will look to further extend their lead atop the NL West in that timeframe. LA leads the division by 1.5 games heading into Monday’s matchup against the Colorado Rockies, and will aim to take a commanding lead at the top during the three-game set. The first game of the series kicks off Monday at 6:10 p.m. PT.
