Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who captured the zeitgeist of a monoculture that no longer exists. Now, they’re active participants in the arenas they once captivated. Sports fans of a certain age have only experienced them as those charismatic guys on television.
Brady is Fox’s crown jewel, while Manning is an Omaha Productions mogul and an Emmy-winning mainstay on ESPN’s alternate “Monday Night Football” broadcast. Manning retired from the NFL in March 2016, and Brady stubbornly followed seven years later, but the rivalry that started it all hasn’t faded at all in their second acts.
“I think Brady’s the most competitive motherf*cker there is,” Peter Schrager said in September 2024. “The fact that Peyton, for the last three years, is winning Emmys and is heralded as the greatest thing to happen to sports media, I think Brady wants to be the best at that, too. I think there’s still a fire there also.”
The origins of Brady and Manning’s heated rivalry are finally getting the documentary treatment. “Winter State Entertainment is developing Brady vs. Manning, a documentary film based on author Gary Myers’ 2015 New York Times best-selling book of the same name,” Ryan Gajewski exclusively reported for The Hollywood Reporter. Myers confirmed the news, writing on X (formerly Twitter) that “production is underway.”
“Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning is the greatest individual rivalry in the 106-year history of the NFL,” Myers said in an official statement. “The careers of the two of the best QBs to ever do it! And Brady and Manning ran side by side. They faced each other an astounding 17 times — 14 more than [John] Elway vs. [Dan] Marino — and were always in each other’s way to get to the Super Bowl. Their games against each other were must-watch and defined an era. Pro football will never see a rivalry like this again! This documentary by Winter State Entertainment will be compelling.”
According to Gajewski, Brady vs. Manning will rely on “exclusive interviews, archival footage, and detailed storytelling” to portray the juxtaposed friendship and rivalry between Brady and Manning. Former coaches and teammates are expected to participate. Immediately, the question is whether Bill Belichick will participate.
Brady finished his 23-season NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he won six of his seven Super Bowl rings with Belichick and the New England Patriots. Manning split his 17-season career between the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, winning one Super Bowl with each franchise.
Brady and Manning clashed five times in the AFC playoffs — Manning holding the 3-2 all-time edge — and though Brady is the GOAT, Manning got the last laugh in their rivalry. Manning’s Broncos defeated Brady’s Patriots in the AFC Championship Game en route to winning Super Bowl 50 and riding off into the sunset.
Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen may have something to say about Myers’ belief that no modern rivalry can sniff the significance of Brady vs. Manning. History rewrites itself all the time. But the purpose of any great documentary is, or should be, to preserve history in a way that reminds its audience that some things aren’t meant to be replicated.
