The Tennessee Titans were on the field for Day 9 of their offseason team activities on Thursday, and unlike Monday and Tuesday, this was a full open practice with media availabilities.
Prior to the start of the practice, head coach Robert Saleh met with the media to discuss multiple topics as the offseason work winds down.
Saleh was asked about his first impressions of Cam Ward, and talked about his development, and appears happy with his young signal caller.
"I think he's been great. You know, like this is the time of year where he's got to try some things. He's got to see what he can and can't do. And then you mix that in with a whole new scheme. Like, I mean, I'll put myself out there. I think it's very safe to say that we've got a really, really, really good quarterback and we're in really good hands."
Continuing on Ward, Saleh discussed where they are with the system installation and the plan in place for Ward.
“Yeah. You know, Daboll does a great job. They’re scripting it in a way that gets the entire offense better. Um, you know, we’re making sure that he gets a chance to see every single look. So we’ve had a lot of walkthroughs also, uh, where he basically gets the reps of everybody — of the ones that he didn’t get when the twos and threes are up. You know, so we’re trying to get him as many looks as possible. We’re trying to make sure that he sees everything. And um, but every day, regardless, we’re always going to try to challenge every player on this football team.”
When asked about rookie running back Nick Singleton, Saleh pointed out that he has a way to go behind Tyjae Spears and Tony Pollard, but has the talent to make an impact.
“Um, early obviously. Um, big back, fast. Uh, he’s learning it all. He’s got a long way to go from that regard, like all rookies do. But um, to be clear, Tony and Taj are the bells of this football team and Nick’s got to compete his way in to find his way into that group.”
Saleh was asked about the incoming rookie class and where they stand as offseason team activities are winding down.
“It’s been good. You know, like uh the biggest thing is just trying to get them caught up from a conditioning level standpoint. Um, I got a report on Anthony Hill today, for example. He’s lost a couple percentage points on his body fat. He looks leaner, he looks faster, he looks like he’s in really good shape and uh you know he’s doing a really nice job. Tate’s doing a really nice job. So they’re all… all of them are just catching up physically. Uh, the mental part will continue to come with reps.”
Saleh was asked about players doing work off on the side during the sessions, specifically Calvin Ridley.
“Yeah, he’s coming off an injury, and we’re just trying to make sure we progress him in the way that we need to. I think he’s going to get some seven-on-seven reps today. So, it’s just part of the protocol to get him to where he’s comfortable with his body.”
These are likely Saleh’s final remarks ahead of the team's mandatory minicamp.
