The Tennessee Titans have kicked off their final minicamp of the offseason and should have their full complement of players at the Nashville facility. During the sessions, if you pay close attention to the specialists, you will see something that differs tremendously from what you see in other teams within the NFL.

Tennessee has only a focused group of specialists and is not carrying any extra training-camp legs, with only kicker Joey Slye and punter Tommy Townsend on the roster. This approach is something special teams coordinator John Fassel touched on ahead of practice.

“I actually preferred having one snapper, one kicker, or one punter through camp. When you know they’re the guy, and I’m pretty certain we have our guys. So, for them to just get all of the work, I think it’s really important for them. And I’m not ever worried about training camp or volume, because we can monitor the volume.”

This is an interesting approach to take, and one that clearly appears to have been successful for Fassel throughout his career, as the results of his units speak for themselves. Not to mention the added roster benefits of adding two to three position players to add competition for the offseason.
