It was our first high school Athlete of the Week voting of the new sports season and with all precincts reporting it wound up being too close to call.
So in the spirit of fair play and because they both have the same name, we are declaring Coachella Valley's Vanessa Garcia and Shadow Hills' Vanessa Monaco as co-winners of the first Desert Sun Athlete of the Week voting.
I can see why it was a tough call. Garcia has been all over the floor for the Arabs' volleyball team and Monaco has been a revelation at quarterback for the Knights' flag football team.
We'll see if this week's voting is just as tight.
Take a look at this week's five candidates, read their accomplishments and vote for your favorite in the poll at the bottom of this article at desertsun.com.
The person with the most votes at noon on Saturday will be declared the winner. Happy voting!
We love to get nominations, by the way. If you know a fall sports athlete that is excelling in any sport, let us know via email at [email protected].
What she did: Fregoso has the 17-3 Knights humming, and not just as they dominate Desert Empire League teams. The team played some out-of-the-desert squads this weekend and came away with two wins thanks in large part to Fregoso. She had a touchdown and an interception in 13-0 win over King Drew (Los Angeles) and had two more receiving touchdowns in a 20-0 win over Beverly Hills.
What she did: Moranda, a talented junior for the Aztecs, has been a versatile player this season and that was never more evident than in a win over Citrus Valley last week. Moranda led the Aztecs in kills with 16, service receives with 18 and was third in digs with 14. A volleyball triple-double if you will.
What she did: The Rajahs' quarterback is growing into her role and becoming more confident and aggressive every week and has become a weapon for the Indio team. In a recent win over Palm Springs, Ortiz threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns.
What she did: The talented sophomore followed up a fine seven-kill, 10-ace performance in an easy win over West Shores, by playing an integral role in the Indians DEL season-opening 3-1 win over Shadow Hills, a tight four-setter.
What she did: In the Rainbow Sandals/Lady Tritons Invitational in San Clemente, the Palm Desert senior shot the best round for the Aztecs with a 6-over 79, good for a tie for 20th in the packed field. The Aztecs finished eighth in a tournament that featured most of the top girls golf teams in the Southern Section.
