Spring practices began at high schools across the region last week with the remnants of an eventful winter snowfall still hanging around on some athletic fields. But, before breaking out the lawn chairs and the sunscreen, we need to crown the Old Colony Memorial’s Winter Season MVP.
There were impressive team performances and individual accomplishments during the winter that kept all of us on the edge of our seats. We have highlighted a group of leading student-athletes to put together a list of candidates for the OCM’s Winter MVP.
Voting is open now and the Winter MVP poll will be active until noon on Sunday, March 29. Vote for your favorite as many times as you’d like. A big congratulations to everyone who was nominated all season long during the weekly poll.
Here is the list of the nominees for the OCM’s Winter MVP.
The three-time Patriot League All-Star led the Blue Eagles in scoring this season despite missing time due to an injury. Chase cracked the top 10 in the league in scoring (17.9 points per game).
A four-year varsity player, the senior captain was the anchor of a young and growing Blue Eagles girls basketball team. She led North in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game, while making the Patriot League All-Star team for her first time.
The senior captain came up with a number of big goals this year. Milne was North’s representative to the Patriot League All-Star squad.
The team captain from Plymouth North scored several big goals this season, earning a spot as a Patriot League All-Star for the second season in a row.
The underclassman from Plymouth North had a huge season in the pool. Ryan was second in the 200 and 500 freestyle races at the Patriot League championships. She went on to take seventh in the 200 free at the South Sectionals, advancing to compete in the Division 1 state championship.
Monteiro won the 1,000-meter race at the Patriot League meet. The all-star played a big role in the Blue Eagles 5-0 dual meet season that earned North the Keenan Division title.
Herndon has competed in only two track and field seasons, and she now has two Patriot League MVP awards to show for the hard work. Herndon’s ability to compete in most events helped North win all its dual meets and capture the Keenan Division crown. Herndon's specialty is the 300. She won the Patriot League title in that event, was runner-up at the Division 2 meet, and then closed out the season with a fourth place finish in the 300 at the Meet of Champions.
Russell had a breakout season, moving on from a 6-25 record as a freshman to becoming a force in the 126 pound weight class this year. The Patriot League All-Star was runner-up at the Division 2 South Sectionals and won a match on his first trip to the Division 2 state finals.

A team captain as a junior, Volkringer led the Panthers to the longest tournament run in program history. The season ended with a three-point loss to eventual Division 2 state champion St. Mary’s of Lynn in the Final 4. The Patriot League All-Star was second in the league in scoring at just over 20 points per game.
The sophomore was selected to the Patriot League All-Star team for the second time. A talented long-range shooter, Pells averaged 10 points per game.
Santosusso made the cut for the Patriot League All-Stars in his first season with the Panther program. The talented center scored multiple important goals for South this winter, leading the team with 16 goals and nine assists.
Hogge was one of the better athletes in the Patriot League this winter, placing second in the 55 hurdles and the long jump at the league finals. Not only was Hogge selected to the Patriot League All-Star team for a second season in a row, but the top-notch student was also named his team’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Hogge set the school-record in the long jump and was also ranked in the top 10 in the state in that event, the 55-meter hurdles, and the 300 dash this winter.
Lasnicki built on a fine freshman season with impressive times this winter that led her to a second all-star selection as well as the Patriot League Fisher Division MVP honor. She placed second at the Patriot League meet in the 300 and took third at the Division 3 state championship, breaking her own school record.
The two-time Patriot League All-Star hit a big career milestone during the individual state tournament when he picked up his 100th career win. The team captain advanced to the all-state finals in the 190 pound weight class after taking second at the Division 2 South Sectionals and then fourth at the D2 states.
