The Detroit Tigers' farm system got a shot in the arms at the MLB trade deadline.
With the addition of six prospects leading up to the trade deadline — five of them pitchers — the Tigers climbed nine spots to No. 13 in Baseball America's final organizational talent rankings for the 2026 season, released Wednesday.
That jump tied for the second-largest in the rankings with the Los Angeles Angels, who moved up from No. 23 to No. 14. The Baltimore Orioles moved up 10 spots, from No. 15 to No. 5.
Just last month, the Tigers saw the largest drop in the outlet's midseason farm rankings, dropping 18 spots from the preseason to No. 22, thanks in part to the graduation of former prospects Kevin McGonigle and Hao-Yu Lee to Detroit. The Tigers' system, however, bounced back behind two major trades, dealing ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers and righthander Casey Mize to the San Diego Padres
In trading Skubal to the the Dodgers, the Tigers landed outfielder Zyhir Hope and pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith, while adding lefthanded pitching prospect Kash Mayfield and farmhand Jackson Wolf in the deal for Mize.
Hope, stationed at Double-A Erie, recently climbed to No. 39 in Baseball America's top 100, while the additions of Ryan, Smith and Mayfield bolstered a system that was considered short on higher-end pitching prospects.
"McGonigle is having one of the best rookie seasons we’ve seen in several years," Baseball America writes, "while the Skubal and Mize trades have added much-needed pitching depth to the farm system."
The Tigers also added prospects as players to be named later in earlier deals for outfielder Jahmai Jones (getting lefthander Jojo Ingrassia from the Boston Red Sox) and catcher Jake Rogers (landing righthander and Hillsdale College product Zane Barnhart from the Baltimore Orioles).
Despite the Tigers selling off two major pieces from their starting rotation, they remain firmly in the mix for the postseason. Following Tuesday's 6-4 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, the Tigers (59-60) have won eight of their last 10 and are just a half-game out of a wild-card spot in the American League entering Wednesday's games.
The Tigers play host to the Guardians on Wednesday night at Comerica Park. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m.
