Tigers' Tarik Skubal rumor reveals 'growing belief' within industry on potential trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Detroit Tigers are in a free-fall right now, dropping down to a brutal 22-38 record, and very much outside of the playoff hunt at the moment.

With such struggles, the focus has naturally fallen upon Tarik Skubal, the back-to-back Cy Young ace, who might be traded this season amid the Tigers' 2026 disaster. But would the Tigers actually trade Skubal?

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, there is a growing belief within industry sources that a trade of Skubal is becoming a much more likely reality.

"Still, a growing belief exists within the industry that Skubal is a goner," Rosenthal shared.

This is a significant update, as these MLB insiders' belief that Skubal will be on the move would make for one of the most contested trade deadline bidding wars in recent history.

The Juan Soto bidding war was a big one, and while Skubal is only a half-season rental, there is sure to be a ton of interest in the back-to-back Cy Young-winning ace.

For the Tigers, this rumor from Rosenthal indicates that Skubal isn't simply trending towards being sold; the use of "goner" implies that the Tigers' left-hander is likely to be traded this season.

Based on how the year's gone for Detroit, and the massive difference in compensation for losing Skubal would be between losing him in free agency or by a trade, shipping him off by the August 3 trade deadline makes a ton of sense.

The "growing belief" within the industry is that Skubal is going to be traded this season, which, while disappointing for the Tigers, might be the best course of action based on how the season's gone.

There will be a heated bidding war for Skubal, and even if the Tigers wait until late July or even until deadline day, it would not be a surprise at this rate to see Skubal dealt for a king's ransom.
