The Detroit Tigers are set to miss Tarik Skubal's services for at least two months as the two-time Cy Young winner is set to undergo left elbow surgery on Wednesday.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Skubal will have his bone chips removed, causing irritation. The initial return timeline is being marked as two months. Assuming no further setbacks take place during recovery, this will allow Skubal to return just ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
Skubal was throwing as hard as 98 mph, the insider noted.

Skubal was in the middle of another good season. In seven games started, Skubal has posted a solid 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts against just six walks. He has given up only two home runs in 43.1 innings pitched.

What happened to Tarik Skubal?
Tarik Skubal threw a seven-inning gem last Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves. During his outing, Skubal felt discomfort in his left arm following a hard-throwing pitch, calling catcher Dillon Dingler to the mound. Manager AJ Hinch and medical staff also came up to the mound to check on their premium ace.
Despite the discomfort, Skubal struck out the side in the seventh inning. The southpaw explained that the issue had been going on for a long time. Later, the issue persisted during a throwing session. Scans revealed "loose bodies" inside his elbow joint, causing irritation and pain.
“This is something that I've been dealing with all season,” he said. “It's good to get an answer, honestly.”
As a result, Skubal has decided to get arthroscopic elbow surgery on his left arm to remove those bone chips. The recovery time is around 2 to 3 months.
The Tigers now might need to start deciding whether they want to trade Skubal or keep him for the season and risk losing him to free agency.
