Thunder receive major boost as Jalen Williams returns for Western Conference Finals originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are getting one of their most important pieces back at the perfect time. Forward Jalen Williams was not listed on the team’s injury report ahead of Monday night’s Game 1 matchup against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, clearing the way for his return after a six-game absence.
For a Thunder team chasing another NBA championship, Williams’ return could significantly alter the series outlook.
The All-Star has not played since suffering a left hamstring strain during Game 2 of Oklahoma City’s first-round sweep of the Phoenix Suns. The injury forced him to miss the remainder of the postseason run up to this point and added another frustrating chapter to a season interrupted by health issues.
Williams, 25, appeared in only 33 regular-season games this season, the fewest of his career. Despite the limited availability, he remained one of Oklahoma City’s most impactful players whenever he was on the floor.
Williams averaged 20.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 51.2% from the field. He also contributed on the defensive end with 1.7 steals per game, continuing to establish himself as one of the league’s most versatile two-way players.
His production extended beyond traditional numbers. Williams provided secondary scoring alongside MVP star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander while often handling key playmaking responsibilities and defending multiple positions. His ability to create offense and impact games without dominating possessions became a critical element in Oklahoma City’s championship formula.
Added firepower ahead of high-stakes series against Spurs
The Thunder managed to advance without him, but his absence was noticeable. Oklahoma City relied heavily on Gilgeous-Alexander and its depth to navigate the postseason while waiting for one of its most complete players to return.
Now Williams re-enters the lineup at perhaps the biggest moment of the season.
The timing matters against a Spurs team that has looked dangerous throughout the playoffs. San Antonio presents challenges with its size, athleticism and scoring balance, making Oklahoma City’s roster depth even more important.
While there may be questions about conditioning and rust after six missed games, Williams’ return instantly strengthens Oklahoma City on both ends of the floor.
For the defending champions, Game 1 suddenly comes with even more optimism.
