Checking off another obstacle, Nikola Topic inches closer to making his long-anticipated NBA debut. The Oklahoma City Thunder have assigned him to the G League's OKC Blue on Sunday. He will play for the squad on Monday against the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
The Thunder have fully supported Topic since his testicular cancer diagnosis in Oct. 2025. After playing in the 2025 Summer League and one preseason game, he underwent surgery to determine if he had cancer. That turned out to be the case, as Sam Presti told the media.
Presti said that Topic's medical group was confident he'd beat it with chemotherapy and eventually return to basketball activities. He also noted that testicular cancer is one of the more curable forms of male cancer. His agent told the media that he completed chemotherapy in Jan. 2026.
Over the last two months, Topic has participated in pregame warmups. Which was obviously a positive sign in terms of how his cancer treatment went. It remains to be seen when the 20-year-old will finally make his NBA debut. Over two-thirds of the way into the 2025-26 regular season, the Thunder sit at 40-13.
The Blue have 17 regular-season games left on their G League schedule. They play their finale on Saturday, Mar. 28. So it'll be interesting to see how many games Topic suits up for in their final six weeks. It'll also be interesting to see if he finally suits up for the Thunder after it ends.
The Thunder added Topic with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NBA draft. He missed last season recovering from a torn ACL. Despite being a one-time NBA champion, he's yet to suit up for OKC.
