What could go wrong, did go wrong for LSU baseball on Monday night. After a 3-1 win over Northeastern on Saturday, the Huskies got revenge vs. the Tigers with an 11-2 victory at Alex Box Stadium. This game was the polar opposite of every other game LSU had played over the weekend.
Cooper Williams got the start on the mound, but after a scoreless first inning, things went south. Amidst a cacophony of errors by the Tigers' defense, Northeastern was able to score four runs in the second inning off of Moore and Zac Cowan. The third inning did not treat Cowan well. An RBI-single and a three-run homer chased Cowan from the mound, but Northeastern wasn't finished scoring yet. They would score two more runs, and after three innings, LSU trailed 10-0.
LSU would then outscore Northeastern 10-3 between the fourth and ninth innings, but that was not enough to erase the 10-run deficit they were in. LSU falls to 11-2 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday against UL-Lafayette. Here are three takeaways from the game.
It has not been the start of the season that anyone has imagined for Zac Cowan. After giving up four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings tonight, Cowan has now given up six runs on 12 hits in only four innings pitched this year. He has an ERA of 13.50.
Edward Yamin IV was one of the few bright spots for LSU tonight. The Redshirt Junior finished the game 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
LSU's defense had four errors tonight against Northeastern, with two of those errors happening in the four-run second inning for Northeastern. If LSU wants to defend its national title, it is going to have to get the errors solved before conference play starts.
