This draft deserves and A+
I disagree completely with a few posts saying how we dropped the ball on the 2nd day, and how some picks on the first day were unimpressive. Maybe people thought we were going after glamour players at glitzy positions only, I'm glad we didn't.
1st - We got 3 playmakers in the first 3 rounds, granted we didn't move down for additional picks, but we came away with the BEST WR in the draft, and the safest, who is familiar with Denny Green. IMO, Fitz compares well to Terrell Owens.
2nd - We drafted possibly the BEST LB in the draft, I know alot of sites who had Dansby ahead of Williams and slightly behind Vilma. This is the player I'm most excited about us drafting. He is a very intelligent linebacker, very good passrusher on the blitz, has the size to play over the TE, along with the range to go sideline to sideline. We have lacked a playmaker at LB for YEARS, Thompson is a huge disappointment IMO, as I thought he could turn out more like Mobley from Denver or IMO, Dansby compares to Arrington, just not as fast, same playmaking ability.
3rd - In Dockett we drafted a pass rusher, plain and simple, what have the Cardinals been the worst at in the NFL the past 3 years, rushing the QB. Even on 3rd and long situations, we have seriously looked like some red headed step child just getting his head beat in on a consistant basis. Denny saw this and when he saw Dockett falling to the 3rd round, it took him lik 30 seconds to get the card in, that should tell you something. I think he replaces Bryant or King as the starter by week 2 or 3 this season, if not in training camp. IMO, Dockett compares to Johnny Randle, if he can stay out of trouble, we have a GEM.
We had a solid 2nd day, could turn out to be very solid if SCOOBY develops into a serviceable pass rusher.
4th - Step - MEAN player(Which I like at OL), very intelligent, will be a starter for us IMO, making all the line calls. Very good run blocker, needs to work on his footwork and pass protection a bit. Should start immediately at OG. He can watch Kendell and how he plays at Center, while trying to hold off our 6th rounder and start at guard.
5th - SCOOBY, I mean Smith - I thought we made a major reach here, at a position that I thought we could address in the UDFA market, and we could have found a good RB in Turner/Lavalais or one of the many decent corners still left on the board. He's an effort guy, but not much of an athlete. I only hope they saw something in him, that alot of us didn't, and can motivate him to play at a high level.
6th - Leckey - I absolutely loved this pick, oh we already drafted a center, he was the BPA imo. This guy plays NASTY MEAN, I mean Steve Wisniewski mean if you know what I'm talkin about. I don't think I'm being presumptious in saying he should challenge for a starting spot early. He's a drive blocker, and picks up blitzes well, I don't think he's as advanced as Step in his ability to make the line calls though. A starter in the 6th round, how can you complain.
7th - Navarre - Solid, another BPA candidate. He will make the team, Parsons is in trouble, and will have to play extremely well in camp to beat out King. I don't think Denny is willing to wait for him to develope, as he will with Navarre. He can make all the throws, he's calm in the pocket. He reminds me of Brady in that he's cool as ice when the pressure is on.
I still think we need an upgrade at corner, with Starks and Macklin starting and Hill at #3, I think we NEED help here before the seasons starts, I don't trust Starks ability to stay healthy at all, he's worn everyones patience in AZ with his big contract/no results. Wilson moves back to SS.
I feel this is Clements last year to show what he's got, I'm betting Denny and Rod are already searching/scouting for his replacement.
Rock solid draft Cardinals, thanks for finally looking like a REAL NFL team on draft day. It gives us hope to think we'll resemble one on Sundays now.
I'm more excited now, than the year we drafted Wadsworth and company. Now it's up to Denny and the coaching staff to develope these players.
