The New York Jets struggled mightily to defend the run last season. They allowed 2,371 rushing yards, fourth-most in the entire NFL. That translated to nearly 140 ground-yards allowed per game. Opposing offenses scored 20 rushing touchdowns against the Jets in 2025.
General manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn made improving those numbers one of their priorities this offseason. First, they traded defensive end Jermaine Johnson II to the Tennessee Titans for nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat. They also signed veteran defensive tackle David Onyemata to a one-year contract in free agency.
Both Sweat and Onyemata should have a profound impact on the Jets' 2026 run defense.
Onyemata had a run-stop-win-rate of 39% this past season, according to ESPN Stats & Info. That was tied for eighth-best in the entire league at his position. Onyemata's 104 'wins' as a run stopper was third-most among all defensive tackles.
Pro Football Focus assigned Sweat an excellent run-stopping grade of 79.3. He was no longer deemed a fit for the Titans' scheme after they hired former Jets head coach Robert Saleh. The Jets were thrilled to acquire Sweat as a run-stopping fix.
Onyemata and Sweat will ensure the Jets' run defense looks very different in 2026.
