Plot Summary: In this exquisitely-made and terrifying new horror film, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family's frightful unraveling.

Set in New England circa 1630, "The Witch" follows a farmer who get cast out of his colonial plantation and is forced to move his family to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest rumored to be controlled by witches. Almost immediately, strange and unsettling things begin to happen-the animals turn violent, the crops fail, and one of the children disappears, only to return seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. As suspicion and paranoia mount, everyone begins to point the finger at teenage daughter Thomasin. They accuse her of witchcraft, which she adamantly denies...but as circumstances become more and more treacherous, each family member's faith, loyalty, and love will be tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.

Writer/director Robert Eggers' debut feature, which premiered to great acclaim at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival (and won the Best Director Prize in the U.S. Narrative Competition), painstakingly recreates a God-fearing New England decades before the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which religious convictions and pagan folklore famously clashed. Told through the eyes of the adolescent Thomasin - in a star-making turn by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy - and supported by mesmerizing camera work and a powerful musical score, "The Witch" is a chilling and groundbreaking new take on the genre.

Movie was very hard to understand. Even though it was spoken in English...their thick accents and dialect made it extremely difficult to understand at times. Movie was very well cast, and acted. However, it was more creepy than scary, and there were long stretches of constant dialogue with really nothing happening. Critics gave it rave reviews, but I would advise people to wait for DVD

Literally just sent a comment to my friend about this exact thing, the critics reaction v the audience reaction. RT has it at 88% fresh, but it only has a 53% audience score. Someone I know online only, who is very forgiving of modern horror movies, raked it over the coals.

I went and saw it...in my opinion it was a huge disappointment, to give an idea of audience reaction in my showing--one guy fell asleep and was snoring loudly, another apologized to his date for making her see it and I heard more than one person say they wanted their money back when credits rolled--and that was just the comments I heard from those around me, I didn't hear a single person walk out talking it up.

I kept waiting for it to get better and it just never really did--it just plodded along and then just ended. Boring movie.

Sounds about right. Critics kept saying how creepy and scary it was. Scariest part of the movie was the music. I don't understand what they were raving about.

My co-worker just said he saw this movie over the weekend and it sucked.

He said it had a slow burn feel to it, but it never paid off.

That is sort of how I felt. I really thought it was building to some big event but it never really went anywhere, just more of the same and then it was over.

I don't fault the actors, who I thought did a fine job but the story, the pace and the atmosphere were all blah. I have no idea why Stephen King said it "Scared the Hell" out of him, he couldn't possibly be serious.

It did get a nice endorsement from the Satanic Temple, so there is that.

Thank you guys for being the test subjects. I will save my money. Honestly, it's so weird. I love this genre but TV just seems to do it so much better.
