As the 2025 draftees get ready to join the team, a member of the Lions 2023 draft is getting ready to leave the team. Seventh-round pick, Antoine Green WR, was released this week after missing the entire 2024 season.
Late-round picks are filled with hopes of outplaying their draft status. After playing in nine games as a rookie, Green appeared to be on his way to doing just that in his second season.
Unfortunately, an injury in the 2024 preseason significantly altered his career. In the first preseason game, Green suffered a reported concussion and was waived with an injury designation just four days later. The waiver was a surprise as most concussions can return-to-play within 2 weeks. For example, Hendon Hooker had a concussion in that same game and returned to play nine days later.
Here is the video of Green's injury:
In analyzing the video, you can see a whiplash effect on his head when his fall is interrupted by #33 Sione Vaki's leg. The whiplash mechanism can cause extreme forces that can injure various parts of the neck including muscles, ligaments, spine, nerves, and blood vessels.
Getting waived just four days after this concussion suggested that this was more than just a typical concussion. An unusually severe concussion or an associated head/neck injury could explain the Lions' decision. An aggravation of a pre-existing neck issue is a possibility as well.
Dan Campbell at that time stated that there were concerning medical "scans" which suggests that something abnormal showed up on imaging. This confirms something unusual happened as the vast majority of concussions will have normal imaging.
Green's timeline is a good example of how any single fluky play can alter or even end a career. After missing an entire season, it's uncertain if he will be able to continue playing. Hopefully, Green can indeed recover and fulfill the promise he was showing at this time last year.

-I believe concussion was not from initial hit but from his fall being interrupted by Vaki's leg causing whiplash.
-Whiplash mechanism can cause concussions due to sudden acceleration/deceleration forcing brain to impact inside of skull. pic.twitter.com/x22mLfk8fm
