At the height of his career, Antoine Winfield Jr. built a reputation with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as one of the best safeties in the game. After an injury-plagued 2024 season, though, the Buccaneers star is in a tough spot in his career.
Despite the concerns that come from missing eight games the prior year, one former Buccaneers legend believes Winfield won't just get back on track, but remain the best player at his position.
For Tampa Bay safety and Super Bowl XXXVII Dexter Jackson knows a thing or two about excelling at Winfield's position for the Buccaneers. He also believes that the son of the veteran Pro Bowl corner will be even better when healthy than he was before.
"As a safety, Antoine Winfield Jr. He was injured last year, but when he’s healthy, he’s an All-Pro," Jackson said in an interview with Roto Grinders' Ben Mendelowitz. "Sacks, interceptions, big hits, fumbles forced, fumbles recovered…he can do it all.
"If he can get back to the level he was playing at in 2023, he’ll be the best safety in the NFL. The Bucs offense will put up points, which means as a safety on the other side, you’re going to have the opportunity to make splash plays, like interceptions, while other offenses try to keep up."
There's a reason why Tampa Bay has won the last four division championships and is on pace for a fifth straight this year. Their offense is one of the best in the league.
But with Winfield healthy, he could put Tampa Bay's defense back to respectability.
And get the Buccaneers thinking more than just a first round exit.
