The Mets could trade Francisco Lindor, but fans keep forgetting one thing originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The biggest question the New York Mets have to answer over the next few months is what they want to do in the offseason.
The Mets, unfortunately, just haven't been a good enough team to suggest that they should keep this current core intact.
That doesn't mean it's all Juan Soto's and Francisco Lindor's fault, but frankly, the Mets have been really bad, and at some point, one of those guys is going to get the blame.
The likeliest outcome here is that Lindor gets most of the blame. Soto is on too long of a contract to really move on from, and he's simply too good to do so, but it brings up some interesting questions about what might happen with Lindor.
Recently, one writer suggested he could be traded.
The more interesting part, however, is that Lindor has 10-and-5 rights, which means that he can veto any trade the Mets want to include him in.
“The New York Mets find themselves in a bit of a weird spot with Francisco Lindor. On one hand, he's still a very good player (no matter what Mets fans might want to tell you), and trading him away will undoubtedly make the Mets worse in the short term.
“On the other hand, Lindor's contract is massive, he's likely going to steadily decline over the course of the next half-decade and his relationship with Juan Soto is a strange one at best. Further complicating the issue, Lindor has 10-and-5 rights, meaning he has full veto power even if the Mets wanted to trade him. If he wants to remain in New York, there's nothing they can do,” Zachary Rotman wrote.
Lindor getting traded would likely indicate that the Mets are just trying to shed some salary.
It's also important to note that the superstar would probably be traded to a really good team, meaning the Mets might not have to worry a whole lot about whether he'd be willing to waive that no-trade clause. It's an interesting topic, however, and it makes for an even more interesting offseason for the Mets.
