If recent history tells us anything, it's this. When the Philadelphia Eagles go linebacker shopping, they don't mind browsing the SEC aisle. The best part about that is this. They have certainly found good fruit there. The conference has treated Philadelphia well in recent years.
Nakobe Dean arrived in 2022 with a championship pedigree. Jihaad Campbell and Smael Mondon followed during the 2025 NFL Draft. That reinforced a clear trend. The Eagles were loading up on speed, range, and big-game experience from college football's toughest proving ground.
Now, it appears that another SEC standout has surfaced on the radar.
In our first seven-round mock draft for the Eagles Wire, we paired the Birds with LSU linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. at No. 136 overall. That idea may not have been far-fetched. According to Ryan Fowler, Philadelphia scheduled a formal combine meeting with the former Tiger.
Before anyone connects too many dots and uses this as cause to allow Nakobe Dean out the door (which the Eagles still might), let's add some context.
Combine meetings are part evaluation, part homework. They don't guarantee intent, but in the Eagles' case, they might. While there has been light speculation about Dean's long-term future, there's no confirmation that the Eagles are actively seeking a replacement.
This is more likely what it usually is for Howie Roseman's front office, thorough due diligence. Perkins is certainly worth the time.
In three of his four seasons at LSU, he earned All-SEC recognition. He was a First-Team selection in 2022, followed by Second-Team honors in 2023 and Third-Team recognition last fall.
His résumé speaks to consistency at the highest level of college football, and his athletic profile suggests versatility. Both are traits that defensive coordinators covet in today's game.
At this stage of the offseason, a meeting is just a meeting. But the Eagles' track record suggests they know exactly what they're looking for in SEC linebackers, and if history is any indication, when Philadelphia shows genuine interest in that conference's defensive talent, it's rarely by accident. Here's a name that you'll want to place an asterisk by as we move through the coming draft process.
