The Detroit Red Wings re-signing of defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker makes the path to the NHL more challenging for the team’s younger defensemen like William Wallinder
Once Simon Edvinsson receives a new deal, the Red Wings will have seven returning defensemen under contract. That counts Axel Sandin-Pellikka who can still go the AHL without going through waivers.
But it seems fair to wonder what the Red Wings’ plan is for William Wallinder, 23, a 2020 second-round pick who is approaching 200 games of AHL experience (counting playoffs). He will have to go through waivers next season.
Wallinder doesn’t project to be a top pairing performer. But he’s an excellent skater and he has improved every season. He is plus-15 this season.
it’s not as if the Red Wings are choosing aging veterans over their younger players. Bernard-Docker and Albert Johansson are both 25. But the Red Wings appreciate how competitive those two are.
GM Steve Yzerman has shown he likes to keep eight defensemen, meaning there is room for Wallinder unless Yzerman adds another veteran. Maybe the plan is to add Wallinder and Sandin Pellikka and let performance sort out who plays.
It’s common that injuries force teams to need nine or 10 different defensemen during the course of a season. The Red Wings will also have highly-regarded Anton Johansson, plus second-round pick Shai Buium in Grand Rapids next season. But next season will be Buium’s second season with Grand Rapids and Johansson has only played a handful of games with the Griffins.
