The Wings signed defenseman William Wallinder to a two-year, two-way contract. Wallinder will make $850,000 if he's in the NHL next season and $110,000 if he's in Grand Rapids. In Year 2, Wallinder makes $900,000 in the NHL and $700,000 with the Griffins.

Wallinder, who'll be 24 on July 28, has spent the last three seasons in Grand Rapids. Last season, Wallinder had two goals and 20 points in 66 games, with a plus-21 plus-minus rating.

Wallinder was a 2020 second-round pick, 32nd overall, and is now waiver-exempt, and can be lost on waivers if he doesn't make the Wings' roster out of the preseason. Wallinder is expected to challenge for a Wings roster spot.

At 6-foot-4, 208 pounds, Wallinder is an elite skater who is comfortable with the puck on his stick, but needs to find consistency and decision-making at both ends of the rink.
