The Grand Rapids Griffins go into tonight’s home game against the Chicago Wolves needing to win three of its next four games to advance to the next round of the AHL playoffs

That’s the consequences of not getting to their game Thursday in 2-1 loss to Chicago in Game 1 of their best-of-five series.

“We have to try to get (the Wolves) to play a different game next game, a harder, tight game,” Grand Rapids defenseman William Lagesson said. “Not to create too many chances back and fourth.”

Red Wings management officials are watching this series closely because a handful of these players, notably Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Carter Mazur, Amadeus Lombardi, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, William Wallinder, Anton Johansson and others, are looking to prove they belong on the Detroit roster.

A Griffins’ lengthy run would also help Detroit’s efforts to establish a winning culture.

Michal Postava is the go-to goalie for the Griffins in the playoffs. Cayden Primeau, the son of former Red Wings forward Keith Primeau, and Amir Miftakhov split time in net for the Wolves. Based on how well Primeau played in Game 1, he seems like the best choice for Game 2

Goalie matchup: Griffins’ Michal Postava (3-2, 1.41, .943) vs. Wolves’ Primeau (21-11-7, 2.41 or .916) or Miftakhov (12-8-7, 3.25, .888)

Who’s Hot

Grand Rapids goalie Michal Postava is trying to play himself into contention for a spot on Detroit’s 2026-27 roster with his strong play. He hasn’t given up more than two goals in any of his first five AHL playoff games.

Who’s Not

The Griffins’ top line of John Leonard, Sheldon Driese and captain Dominik Shine hasn’t produced a goal yet in these playoffs

What Griffins Want To Do

  1. Create more offensive chances. The Griffins need more goals. That’s on the top line. That’s on the Amadeus Lombardi line with Brandsegg-Nygard and Mazur. This team has scored enough all season. They need rediscover their scoring touch.
  2. Stay disciplined. The Wolves are a skilled offensive team that will make the Griffins pay on the power play. Chicago’s one power play goal in Game 1 was the difference.
  3. Dictate Tempo: The Griffins need to play their game, instead of letting the Wolves get into their offensive rhythm.
