I don't think that he is.

I think that Gillespie has proven that he is worth more than a min. deal. He is a good shooter, a quite mistake-free PG and a willing and active defender. He is short but knows his limitations and still founds a way to finish above bigmen.
I would not exclude at all that someone makes him an offer above the min.

He i

He has less than 20 game resume in the NBA. The more other teams were able to account for him the less effective he was. I like him but he's not worth more than a minimum deal and we better hope he doesn't get any larger offers because we have no bird rights and can't offer him more than the minimum unless we are below the second apron.

I could find dozens of guys making the minimum around the league better than Gillepsie. If he wants to be here and develop then he'll have to accept a deal for the minimum. Keep in mind, Oso makes about the minimum as a 2nd round pick. Dunn as a late 1st rounder makes just a little over the minimum as well. Plumlee, Morris, Tyus, and Bol² were all on minimum deals. The league is handing out more minimum deals now with apron restrictions and less midtier salaries.

The Suns sign Collin Gillespie to a standard NBA contract for 1 year.

Wish it was a multiple year contract but at least the Suns got it done.

Hope he has lived in the gym since... April, or whenever the rest of the Suns took vacation. Most of the team checked out before Christmas.

Except the gauchos.

He would be stupid to sign a multiple year deal, because he has not proven he is worth more than the minimum. If he believes in himself at all the only place to go is up.

This kid needs to get his shot.
Would you rather have him or CP3 get minutes?

Personally I would rather give the minutes to him even though I don't think he is much of a distributor.

The Suns should have signed Gillespie to a multi-year early last season and I said so.

When you wait for a player to prove himself, like Robert Sarver did with Joe Johnson, it's often too late.

There is enough playing time at PG for both.
Is there really? Green and Booker are going to get 35 minutes each.

Then somehow you have to find time for Grayson/Brea?/Beal????

I think that only leaves you with 10 minutes or so a game to split between CP3/Gillespie.

Why would signing him any earlier resulted in a different outcome. He would have been just as dumb to take a multi year deal then.

We don't even know if a couple of those players will even be here this coming season.

Because it was early in the season and he had not received much playing time to show what he could do with the Suns.

A number of two-way players were elevated to sign multi-year contracts by other teams.

I was mostly projecting off what he did with the Nuggets.

Yeah - that's why I put question marks by their name - but even if only 1 is here - they still will get 13 minutes or so at the backup shooting guard spot.

So at best - I see 13 minutes available for the backup PG spot - AT BEST. If they decide to keep Beal and play him it will be less than that.

By the way Gambo said the other day the plan is to keep Grayson and Royce. That says to me there is almost no way to trade them.

If this is true, then it speaks more about the Suns having a plan to trade or buyout/stretch Bradley Beal.

The suns would not have offered more than the minimum. There is no incentive for any player to sign a multiyear minimum deal unless they think they are going to get injured.

Players do sign multi-years deals, even minimum players, but they usually contain options.

Maybe they have plans - but I don't think the rest of the NBA is cooperating.

Pretty sure the plan was to trade Grayson for cap savings, but it sounds like no one will do that without compensation - which we don't have.

Personally I don't think they are able to get much of anything done right now. Maybe that changes after free agency and teams miss out on being able to improve.

It is extremely rare. If a multi year deal is signed it is almost always above the minimum. Again I will say any player that has any belief in themselves at all would be stupid to sign a multi year minimum deal.

Viva los Guachos! Welcome to the new young Guachos. The Guachos have now doubled in size. It's a movement now.

Suns are said to not be pursuing CP3 and I don't blame them. He's mostly a half court player. The new Suns are going to be much faster paced.

He doesn't want a multi-year minimum contract. He wants more money, and the only way to do that is on a make-good that he can use to up his value. If he's good enough, he may price himself out of being on the Suns in 26-27, but it is what it is.

Free agency really doesn't start today until 3 PM Arizona time. Maybe there will be some surprises.

The Durant trade can still be amended until approved by the NBA.

I'm now curious if last season under the Two-Way deal counts towards Bird rights. If so, the Suns will have early Bird rights on Colin after this year and he can see a nice raise but if not then we're in a tough spot unless we can create cap space to keep him, or have an exception available.

Ultimately this is a make or break year for Gillepsie. I think he can be a TJ McConnell type guy as far as top tier backup PG who can occasionally provide a spark. Happy for the kid and the other Gauchos to build on what they started last year. Chemistry and culture needs to be cultivated over time and this is a good sign for the second unit.
