The Los Angeles Dodgers ended up winning the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes, but that did not come without much controversy. After all, most contenders were going after Skubal on the trade market, and many believe that the Detroit Tigers didn’t maximize the return they got for their ace by accepting the Dodgers’ offer.
The Tigers acquired top outfield prospect Zyhir Hope, top pitching prospect River Ryan (both in MLB.com’s top 100 prospects list), and 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Brady Smith from the Dodgers in exchange for Skubal. But some believe that the Milwaukee Brewers could have beaten that offer had they been given a chance to do so.
According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, the Brewers offered three position player prospects, two of whom were in the top 100 list, including 18th-ranked prospect Luis Pena. Assuming that the top prospect in all of baseball, Jesus Made, is untouchable, Milwaukee conceivably could have included Luis Lara, Jett Williams, or Josh Adamczewski in the package for Skubal.

Perhaps the Tigers, believing that they’re set in the infield for years to come, identified Hope as the best prospect they could have gotten in any trade. Moreover, losing Skubal meant that Detroit will be needing a pitcher, and Ryan, as a 27-year-old prospect, is as MLB-ready as it can get.
Whatever the case may be, it’s clear that the Brewers were uncharacteristically very aggressive on the trade market. Skubal has been one of the best pitchers in MLB over the past five years or so, and Milwaukee now has the best record in MLB. In a Dodgers-dominated world, having Skubal around would have helped push them over the hump.
Alas, the Dodgers played elite defense and forked over the necessary assets to beat out every other team, including the Brewers, for Skubal’s services. Nonetheless, Milwaukee has enough talent on the pitching side of the ball anyway to make a run for the World Series title, especially when they have Jacob Misiorowski, who has been the best pitcher in the big leagues in 2026 to this point.
