There was a chance the Texas Longhorns softball team would get the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA postseason tournament, which starts on Friday, May 15. But when the field was announced on Selection Sunday, the Horns got the No. 2 national seed. Texas will start its national title defense by hosting a regional in Austin, featuring Wisconsin, Baylor and Wagner.
Texas won the SEC postseason tournament with a resounding 6-1 win over Alabama. But in the end, the selection committee favored the Crimson Tide for the top overall seed. The SEC has six of the eight national seeds. Oklahoma is the No. 3 seed, Arkansas is No. 5 and Florida is No. 7. There are a total of ten SEC squads in the field.
Texas will open the NCAA Tournament in the Austin Regional against Wagner (22-26) at 3 p.m. CT Friday, May 15, at McCombs Field. The game will stream on ESPN+. Wagner will take on Baylor at 12:30 p.m. CT.
The winner of the Austin Regional will play the winner of the College Station Regional in the Super Regional. The winner will head to the Women's College World Series.
The No. 2 overall seed is the second-highest seed in program history. Texas was named the No. 1 nataional seed in 2024. Last year, en route to a national championship, UT was the No. 6 overall seed.
