The Houston Texans may have had a bad night, but quarterback Davis Mills actually had a decent performance against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Due to quarterback Graham Mertz's injury just before halftime, Mills ended up playing most of the game, finishing with nine completions for 82 yards and a touchdown.
“Obviously we didn't get the result we wanted. We want to go out there and play to win, but unfortunately we didn't do that. I thought it was a positive." Mills said postgame. "I thought process-wise, everything was done very efficiently and clean. We were getting in and out of the huddle and communicating. Some plays just don't execute or play out the exact way you want it to on the field. Credit to the other guys on the Chargers for playing a good game and getting the win. It's definitely a great learning opportunity to go out there and get live reps for all of our guys, myself included, and we're looking forward to the next one.”
With Mertz most likely out for the season with a torn ACL, Mills could see more preseason action in the next two games against the Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers.
He is going into his sixth year with the Texans and has served as the backup to starter C.J. Stroud since 2023.
While there was no competition for the backup quarterback job, the Texans will likely look to add a third-string quarterback to the roster. Earlier this month, the Texans worked out several quarterbacks, including former
