The Houston Texans have found a new running back.
The Texans claimed running back Cody Schrader off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday, adding depth to their running back room. In a corresponding move, Houston elected to waive veteran fullback Jakob Johnson.
Johnson, who joined the Texans this offseason, played in seven games this season. He did not record a stat, but mostly saw action on special teams.
Schrader, who previously played on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad, made headlines during his breakout 2023 season at Missouri. That year, Scharder rushed for 1,627 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior for Missouri, catching 41 passes for 328 yards while helping Missouri finish with an 11-2 record and Cotton Bowl victory over Ohio State.
For his career, Scharder has played in two career games with one catch for six yards and one carry for three yards. Right now, the Texans could be without Nick Chubb, who suffered a rib injury in Sunday's 20-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Texans take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday at NRG Stadium. With a win, Houston would extend its winning streak to six games and secure a third consecutive winning season under Ryans and quarterback C.J. Stroud.
