Tennis: Bull Dogs hold off Lady Pirates for sectional crown

Sectional host Columbus North posted a narrow 3-2 victory against Greensburg in the championship to win the Lady Bull Dogs’ 12th straight sectional title.

Greensburg got a win at No. 3 singles as Adelynn Stier knocked off Molly Richards 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. The Lady Pirates No. 2 doubles team of Kiera Kennelly and Sophie Buening defeated Dhish Vudathaneni and Grace Merritt 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.

At No. 1 singles, Columbus North’s Valeria Cortes defeated Mary Harmon 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Greensburg’s Emma Kuntz fell 6-4, 6-1 to Lucy Bergman. At No. 1 doubles, Greensburg’s Mya Comer and Averi Helms lost to Nino Akhalaya and Isa Pan 6-4, 6-3.

The Dogs secured the team victory after just three matches, and Greensburg took the last two in tiebreaker fashion.

Columbus North advances to the Bedford North Lawrence Regional.

At Connersville

The host Lady Spartans of Connersville claimed the tennis sectional title with wins against Union County and Franklin County.

In the opening round, Franklin County defeated Rushville 5-0. Connersville knocked off Union County 5-0.

Despite three of the five matches going the distance of three sets, Connersville won the championship by the score of 5-0.

Connersville advances to the Center Grove Regional to face Perry Meridian.

At Batesville

Host Batesville opened Sectional 19 with a sweep of South Dearborn. East Central defeated Milan in the other quarterfinal match.

In the semifinal round, Batesville defeated Lawrenceburg 5-0 and East Central held off Oldenburg Academy 3-2.

The Lady Trojans won the sectional title with a 3-2 victory against Batesville.

East Central advances to the Bedford North Lawrence Regional to face Seymour.
