MANSFIELD - Golf season is underway!
We're taking a look at the top boys teeing off this season in the area and what sets them apart from the rest.
Let's see who made the list along with a slew of honorable mentions poised to play key roles on their teams this fall and could be set for season-altering breakthroughs.
A now three-time Richland County Junior Golf Championship winner, nobody comes into the season with more momentum and a higher ceiling than Durchik. The reigning Ohio Cardinal Conference Golfer of the Year carried that into sectionals where he was runner-up with a 74 at Sycamore Springs and ended his season the following week at districts tied for 15th with an 80 at Shawnee Country Club. Division I is the toughest to advance from with just one individual state qualifying spot from the Northwest District, but if anywhere around here is capable of going low enough to do it, it's Durchik.
Twins who play more like 1A and 1B, the Bowmans give the Cougars one of the best top end duos in the area. Cole is coming off Firelands Conference Golfer of the year honors helping guide Crestview to its third league title in four years while Carter was the team's lone representative at districts shooting an 81 to tie for 22nd at Stone Ridge Golf Club following co-medalist honors the week before at sectionals. Look for these two to duke it out for top honors each round and see how far they can lead the Cougars.
One of the co-medalists alongside the aforementioned Bowman above, Rogers has been a cornerstone for the Royals golf program since entering high school. He fired a 74 at Valley View last year in sectionals and was runner-up for Northern 10 Golfer of the Year helping the program win back-to-back league titles. And at districts, his 80 at Stone Ridge was the lowest among returners matching Durchik. Rogers has some stiff competition in the N10 this fall and will see a lot of these names in the postseason as well.
This duo gives the Rams a ton of experience on the links this fall which will be an invaluable asset in what is expected to be a heated OCC race. Maglott was first team All-OCC capping off the regular season with a 79 at Shelby Crossing in the third league shootout and helped the team qualify for districts where Shepherd carded an 81 for the lowest score among returners after being the drop score at sectionals and the final OCC Shootout. This is a Rams team loaded with talent and having guys like Maglott and Shepherd to lead the way makes them very dangerous.
The area's lone district qualifier returning in Division II, Lenahan fired an 82 at Maumee Bay State Park last fall to finish in a tie for 12th just three stokes off the final state-qualifying berth. He was honorable mention All-Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference as a sophomore and has already helped the Whippets win a tournament this season. The MOAC is shaping up to be a three-horse race with Shelby the early favorite.
First team All-Northern 10 as a freshman and sophomore, Berry has been the driving force for the Eagles' dramatic turnaround as a program. They won their first sectional title in 25 years last fall and his 83 at Stone Ridge saw him finish in a tie for 30th. Colonel Crawford has started off the year strong, too, winning the Buckeye Central Invite followed by second at the Bucyrus Elks Invitational, and most recently took control of the N10 winning the first tournament of the season thanks to Berry's 71.
The Arrows lost their three top finishers at sectionals which would typically devastate a program. Luckily, Snay and Ellis are back to slot right into the vacant positions at the top. Snay was second team all-league last year and most recently fired a 70 at the first OCC Shootout of the season while Ellis was honorable mention as a sophomore and has been a consistent scorer for Ashland already.
You've got to be pretty special to make the list as a freshman — Studer is just that. After winning the RCJGC 13-14 division last summer, he defended his title in impressive fashion winning by 17 strokes. He is in the mix for the Rams' No. 1 spot already and even if he doesn't tee off there, he's part of a Madison lineup that has potential to go all the way this fall.
Tinch was first team All-MOAC last fall and Hart was second team as the Tigers return a strong core looking to bring the program back to glory. Hart comes into the fall with some momentum coming off a RCJGC title in the 15-16 division and Tinch has already started strong with medalist runner-up honors at the Bucyrus Elks Invitational with a 73 and then a 75 at the Galion Invite.
