In Field Yates' final 2025 NFL mock draft, he had the Indianapolis Colts picking tight end Colston Loveland at 14th overall.

However, what was noteworthy about this was something that Mel Kiper mentioned, specifically that there might be teams trying to jump the Colts in order to grab Loveland before them.

"Everyone is connecting the Colts to the tight ends," Kiper wrote. "As such, I've heard that a few teams might even be trying to trade ahead of Indianapolis to get Loveland, though it's unclear which ones."

Of course, with the unpredictability of the NFL draft, almost nothing is guaranteed, but Tyler Warren being taken in the top 10 seems to be the consensus among many of the expert draft analysts out there.

So when it comes to Round 1 options at this positon, that may leave the Colts, and other tight end needy teams, like potentially Denver or the LA Rams, to either find a way to get Loveland, or wait until Day 2 to address the need with some tier 2 or tier 3 prospects.

This scenario that Kiper is alluding to, where a team jumps the Colts, played out in Daniel Jeremiah's mock draft, and as we discussed there, that would put the Colts in a very difficult position when it comes to tackling this need.

As mentioned, there is a dropoff from Warren and Loveland to the next tier of tight ends. LSU's Mason Taylor is widely considered TE3 in this draft, but could be long gone before the Colts are back on the clock again at pick 45.

So in this worst-case scenario, at a position where the Colts have a major hole, they may end up with the fourth or fifth-best option. Now, that doesn't mean that player can't come in and make a quick impact, but that becomes less of a given the further into the draft you go.

If Warren does go in the top 10, that could raise the level of urgency from Chris Ballard to go and get Loveland, rather than waiting for him to hopefully make it to pick 14.

The challenge there is that trading up requires giving up additional draft resources, which the Colts do not have a lot of, and it's not as if tight end is the only need they have. Depending on how the early portion of Round 1 plays out, the Colts could find themselves in a difficult spot when it comes to the tight end position.
