Sports Illustrated's NFL insider Albert Breer has heard that the Indianapolis Colts have been linked to both Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland in this year's NFL draft.
"Indy was linked plenty last year to Brock Bowers—he went two picks before they took Laiatu Latu—and the Colts could be in play for such a player once again," Breer wrote. "I’ve heard them linked to both Warren and Michigan TE Colston Loveland, whom some teams actually prefer to his Big 10 rival."
The ideal scenario for the tight end-needy Colts would be having the opportunity to draft either player, at which point, that decision would come down to which prospect they feel fits best within their offense.
While both have the ability to impact the passing game, as Daniel Jeremiah detailed recently, Warren and Loveland will do that in different ways. Jeremiah also believes that Warren is the better blocker, but that Loveland can hold his own.
However, I would guess that right now, the Colts won't have the luxury of picking between Warren and Loveland. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. highlighted a few teams within the top 10 who would make sense for Warren. The overall lack of high-end talent in this year's class could also make teams more willing to address a non-premium position early on.
Even when it comes to Loveland, ESPN's Peter Schrager is hearing that Loveland will go earlier than where the consensus mock drafts have him. Does that mean he could go before the Colts pick as well?
Breer would add that if the Colts went in a different direction on Day 1 that LSU's Mason Taylor could be an option at tight end on Day--although we then have to ask ourselves, will Taylor even be available at pick No. 45?
Having a really good tight end can be a cheat code for an offense. That player creates mismatches for themselves and their teammates and can help disguise what's coming. So while the Colts have a major need here, there are a lot of other teams who would benefit from having Warren and Loveland within their offenses.
This decision for the Colts at tight end might not end up being about choosing Warren or Loveland. Instead, that decision could be made for them, depending on who is available when they are picking.
