Norwegian great Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won a record equalling fifth gold medal at one Winter Olympics in the team sprint while Sweden returned to the top in the women's race from their relay mishap.
Competing together with Einar Hedegart, Klæbo decided the race in the anchor leg when he surged clear on the final uphill which allowed him to celebrate on the home straight.
The Norwegians won 1.4 seconds ahead of strong American pair of sprint silver medallist Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher. Bronze like in the relay went to Italy from Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino.
Klæbo drew level with American Eric Heiden who swept all five speed skating golds in 1980. Klæbo can get a sixth for sole possession of the record in the concluding 50km on the weekend. He swept all six golds at last year's world championships.
His record-extending 10th gold overall includes a third straight team sprint title after he also got a third straight sprint gold last week. His other Milan/Cortina golds came in the 10km, skiathlon and relay.
In the women's race, world champions and 2022 silver medallists Jonna Sundling and Maya Dahlqvist lived up to their top billing. Sundling opened a gap at the halfway mark which Dahlqvist managed to extend as they never looked back.
Nadja Kaelin and Nadine Fähndrich earned silver for Switzerland 1.9 seconds back and Germany's Laura Gimmler and Coletta Rydzek pipped Norway for bronze.
For Sundling and Dahlqvist it was the first gold at the Games after they earned silver and bronze respectively behind compatriot Linn Svahn in the individual sprint.
Sundling also has a silver from the relay where the Swedish favourites lost the gold when Ebba Andersson fell twice and Norway took gold.
Wednesday's success was the fourth for the Swedish women from five races as they bounced back from the relay mishap. The concluding 50km are on the weekend.
