For forty minutes, it looked like Finland had the script written. Disciplined, structured, and opportunistic, the Finns built a 2–0 lead and had Team Canada searching for answers. But in classic Canadian fashion, the red and white roared back late in the second period and in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals to stun Finland 3–2 in a dramatic comeback victory that will be remembered as one of the tournament’s defining moments.

Finland controlled much of the early pace, clogging the neutral zone and capitalizing on turnovers. A sharp finish off a transition rush opened the scoring in the first period, quieting the Canadian bench and energizing the Finnish side.
The pressure continued in the second frame. After a sustained shift in the offensive zone, Finland doubled its lead with a well-placed shot through traffic, beating the screened Canadian goaltender to make it 2–0. Canada generated chances but struggled to solve Finland’s tight defensive structure and composed goaltending.
Canada scored a late goal in the period, but Finland still looked to be in control.

Whatever was said in Canada’s dressing room worked. Canada came out flying in the third period, pushing the pace and forcing Finland onto its heels.
Canada’s forecheck intensified, turnovers mounted, and the ice began to tilt. Midway through the period, a perfectly executed passing play tied the game 2–2, sending the Canadian bench into a frenzy and putting visible pressure on the Finnish side.
With under five minutes remaining, Team Canada completed the comeback. Canada went on the power play and scored with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation to go up 3-2 and advance to the gold medal game.

Trailing 2–0 against a team as structured as team Finland could have been a breaking point. Instead, it became a turning point. The win not only keeps Canada’s championship hopes alive but also reinforces a familiar narrative: no lead is safe against Team Canada.
